that bentley is lovely.

my dad (who knows a fair bit about them)

thinks its a gurney nutting body - they always made very elegant shapes with flowing wings

its still showing as taxed on the dvla system

Can we get back to 'in period' shots now please?

Does this count? This is me, circa 1976.

I see your 1976 picture and raise you one of me on my father's Trokart with a JLO engine in 1963 - this is what passed as racing machinery then.

I had a smaller one of my own which I crashed when I found out how to select second gear.

The boot lid of the car in the background is my father's Sunbeam Supreme

And me 10 years later on a Devinsons Sprint Leggero

You know your bikes Pat!

Here's Uncle Gordon, on Dad's AJS.

I think I may have a bit of a mancrush on your Uncle Gordon. He looks like he was an absolute hoot.

Dateline July/August 1962.

My parents take my brother and I on a five week long holiday. Countries visited France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Whilst in Sweden and Norway we drive as far as the Artic Circle.

Points of note, a few laps of the Zandvoort race circuit, mainly gravel roads in Sweden and Sweden was still driving on the left.

Car Sunbeam Rapier.... so a few scanned pics from slides

Hi Robert

Great pictures. Interesting trailer, do you know the supposed rationale behind just one wheel over two?

Single wheel trailers used to be used behind scooters quite a bit. I've never seen one behind a car though, maybe it was a leftover put to good use?

My word, they are fantastic.

What a wonderful trip.

I thought that driving a 25 year old Esprit to Le Mans was a bit of an adventure, but I am humbled.

Thanks for posting the link.

Absolutely brilliant. I really enjoyed that, it makes you realise how easy it is to travel across Europe now, now border crossings and main roads that are surfaced properly.

I would love to have seen Europe in the fifties.

Thank you so much Simon for posting this. What a fantastic trip and absolutely superb photos.
Makes my recent trip to the Picos mountains in the Aston, with full breakdown cover etc, look very tame.

I too have been scanning the old man's slide collection(finished those and now wading slowly through a mountain of negatives!); I posted these on this thread first, but they belong here as well:

There are loads of others, rather than hog the thread I'll put them up a bit at a time.

another stop to cool down and refill the radiator.

A touring holiday in the north of Scotland; that's mum's head visible in the Spitfire.

Grandparents' Singer Gazelle? "leavin' on a propellor plane".

Setting up camp in Deutschland.

HTE senior(first from right) hamming it up with a pipe while visiting friends in Germany; 3rd and 4th standing from the (our)left is Grandad and Grandma HTE. Is the car a Borgward? Not sure.

ETA Bodo identifies it as a Lloyd Alexander

HTE senior's Spitfire Mk2 and Grandma's ADO16 on holiday in Spain.

That wonderful picture of the Car transporter is a Silver City Bristol Superfreighter. I believe thay operated cross-channel from Lydd in Kent and Hurn at Bournmouth.

Indeed he was, very popular guy. My main memory is of him stuffing lit cigarettes into the funnels of my model trains for added realism. biggrin
