911 novice thread

Been and sat in a 2008 carrera today at The car specialist in sheffield. Its up at £32k and was pretty tidy as I'd expect from there. I could see one of those sat in my garage altho i didn't test drive it. Unmarked interior and only a couple of minor stone chips on the bonnet as faults. Just had new discs and pads up front. Someone recently paid porsche for the privilege of supply and fit 4 tyres to the turbo rims its wearing for almost 1800 quid.
Overall it was exactly as you'd expect of a tidy 911

Good enough to purchase?
They are great cars, I have loved all of mine and find the overall owning experience superb.
It might sound strange but I enjoy looking at and cleaning it as much as driving it, its the whole overall ownership experience.
Something I am sure you are probably familiar with owning that glorious Sunbeam Lotus.

you made a good point tbh. I have a daily 4x4 i have never washed that is as muddy insude as out yet i wash and clean the Sunbeam every time i drive it and often take the wheels off to clean inside the arches. I've had it on ramps to clean underseal runs out of the chassis after i used bilt hamber a bit too much in warm weather ☺They are great cars, I have loved all of mine and find the overall owning experience superb.

The ownership aspect and pride of ownership is a big part of something like this. The 911 today was very much something i could easily live with on a limited mileage toy basis and keep spotless. I have a ducati 748 that is concours too and often gets cleaned more than ridden lol

You will know the right car as soon as you see it, I get a gut feeling when I know its right. I personally don't mind silver but not a great yellow fan on a 911, love the yellow on my old VW camper but that's just personal preference, Yellow 911s are very popular.

The last two times cars became investments over bricks and mortar the bottom fell substantially out of them
I can see 964's at 25k again.
And 993s True like a lot of air-cooled I've near tripled my money in just over two years but I didn't buy with that in mind so if the bottom falls out I couldn't give a stuff as I very much doubt it will be worth less than I paid when I eventually sell. Buying now may be a different story.I can see 964's at 25k again.
OP put an ad out to try and get in on a deal before a dealer takes it as there will be people who need to sell. I was offered a sub 100k 993 Cpe last month for £25k but wasn't in a position to go and view it. The seller drove it to a specialist dealer who gave him £27k saying he'd retail at £34k+. Any air cooled at less than £30k will need some work and they ALL need subsequent maintenance for which parts aint cheap. As Stutts says some 996 are increasing.
There was a 996TT sold by an Indy on behalf of a customer for £20k last month. 100k+ miles but very good conditon and the new owner is over the moon. A year ago you could pick up a Turbo for sub £20k but not any more. OK the build quality and trim is not on par with earlier or later models but what's not to like in a car that can reach 200mph?

i've done some reading on the IMS /seal issue, but as yet not seen much about "bore scoring" and which engines that might affect
looking at the age of the yellow car above, is that likely to fall into any of the major worry areas?
I believe this does fall into both bore scoring and ims after speaking to cavendishporsche........very good warranty may be worthwhile but pricey!
Hartech have slightly different ideas on bore scoring and as to which models stating the later engines seem fine as the coating was different...

Fair comment. I could realistically get one but my budget is bang on troublesome range prices. The bubble for the genuine aircooled stuff thats nice looks to be 30k absolute minimum and rising. And some of them look very tired at the bottom end of that range
Wow! I bought a 3.2 Carrera with 65k on the clock in beautiful condition for 12k back int'day. That was about 8 years ago, mind.If you want a Tiptronic 993 this looks good value (and clearly there is a void bewteen what you can buy them at and what an owner 'thinks' they are worth ) Although it might now be 'reserved'

i've never had any dealings with a tiptronic box before, are they good/reliable?http://www.jrmotorcompany.co.uk/porsche-911-993-ca...
that car looks tidy, but its had a lot of owners and the mileage is creeping. it does look smart and i can see that holding its value.

Number of owners irrelevant - it's a 20yr old car. All about condition and in my experience those that own these cars a long time will often skimp on annual servicing/preventative maintenance if they dont use it much whereas newer owners have the enthusiasm.
I've had a 993 Tiptronic which is basically a Merc gearbox so its bulletproof. Not as prized as a manual, which is reflected in the lower value, but is a good combo for mixed driving. In the 3yrs I owned it not a single problem but the low (50k) mileage and very original condition ruined the driving experience. Sure I covered all my costs and more when I sold it (and the new owner has now likely near doubled his money), but no point in keeping it if I worried about putting on the miles so decided to buy a 964 only to find they've found a new following and can fetch more than 993
At least it's all about condition and tasteful mods on a 964 rather than how many miles on the clock. A 1990 964 C4 with IIRC 100k+ miles recently sold private for £45k
In reality and with your expectations of finding a low owner, low mileage, good condition air-cooled at your budget the boat has sailed.

If it were me I'd go for an "S" with the extra power, and not the 4wd which adds weight and complexity. Is the car going to be a daily (in which case the 997 or 996 is more than capable) or a special for weekends / summer in which case you should try for something a bit more charismatic like the 993/964 although you'll have to double your budget to get a decent 993.As someone has mentioned the 996 engine problems appear more serious than is the case because of internet folklore - think of that before jumping into a 5 year old out of warranty M3....
