I don’t like smashing up cars because it annoys people, i do it purely for the adrenaline buzz, and if its a rare car, it just makes the buzz even bigger
ploker, that is why people object. You do take pleasure in wrecking old cars. Perhaps you should have been more honest about it from the start. With all due respect, I really don't think that you have the knowledge or experience to know what effort some people would put into a car to get it back on the road. You seem quite agricultural really. People do spend years both looking for, and restoring the types of cars that you are talking about. Just because no one has offered you many thousands on PH doesn't mean that they don't exist. Most Veryon owners don't post on PH either.
Can I suggest that you seek out possible buyers for cars in future? I'm sure that many people here would help you if you wanted to sell something like a Rover 12, and your bank account might be far better off.
Of course, if you want to continue destroying what others would love, no one can stop you.

You lot moan because im smashing a classic up and its a waste, i bet half of you who own classic cars, the cars see less daylight in the time youve owned it locked up in a garage than the amount of time it spends on the road And locking a gorgeous series 1 xj6 in a garage and nhardly ever drivin it is a bloody waste in my opinion!
No moaning from my end mate. My series 1 XJ6 came straight off the "for sale" section on Ovalchat.... its done 6000 miles in the last 6 months, including a trip to the Le Mans Classic. It's going to Monaco next year. Since I bought it, it has seen the inside of a garage once, and that was at a tyre fitters. Its been ran in everything from snow, to flood, to sun.Just like the racers, we're not all the same on here. But as I found out quickly... if more people put their money where their mouth was, they could have some of the cars. They're not exactly hidden.

I think you totally under-estimate Plonker. As far as I can tell the only things lost to the classic car fraternity of the XK150 were a few wings, everything else was stripped beforehand or sold on afterwards.
I can actually understand the buzz that he gets by wheeling out something unusual for a banger race. As a spectator, a grid of Mazda 323's or similar would be dull as ditch water, that's why meetings like the Firecracker etc are so popular with fans and competitors.

The bizzarre part is why we never get offered these cars and why do they go straight to the Banger boys?. Probably because they advertise, `cars cleared for free` in the local papers.Weigh in the scrap and keep the good for racing.
Not being funny mate, but youve just sort of answered yourself, your never offered these motors, they go straight to the banger boys because we make the effort to get them, adds in news papers, on the side of there recovery trucks etc, so dont that tell you somthing, if you want the cars, make just as big effort as we do and you might get somewhere, not just sitting at home and moaning when you hear what a banger boy has got, not saying you sit at home etc, just an example.Us baner boys travell all over the country to get our cars, i live in london, and went all the way up to scotland to get the rover 12, 16 hour trip there and about 20 hours back as transit blew up a pushrod just before nottingham, then there are some cars that are on the door step, the xk150 for instance was just 2 driveways along from where our yard is. If you (not you personally mate) put the effort in you et some where.

I know he mentioned it here during the conversation about the 150.
Sadly 420s are the least loved Jaguar, it doesn't have the curves of the earlier cars, the grandeur of the Mk10/420G nor the looks of the XJ. I think that even the XJ40 has recently acquired more of a following than the poor 420.

And to your last comment, i no exactly what you mean, you dont have to look hard to find a classic car, i no of a series 4.2 manual xj6 within 10 minutes of me, a lush mk2 granada saloon, mk1 granada coupe, mk2 granada estate, standard vangaurd, standard ensign, a40 somerset....the list goes on and on, and they are ALL laid up in a yard/ garden. So it goes to show, you look hard enough, you find em!

As to your suggestion, i see where your coming from, but please explain to me the point of that, my hobbie is banger racing, i buy cars to build and race, why would i go out of my way, to buy the car in the first place, rover 12 for instance, near on £800, 3 day trip and alot of work to get it, just to go and offer it too someone else, the car was on ebay, so that means that anyone could have bought it, i won, then people get pissy with me about it just because i won? Hows that fair on me?
To retrocosworth though, the car is all built and i will get some pictures next week when im back up the yard mate.

Im not saying everyone who owns a classic just lets them sit in a garage, i just cant see the point in having such a nice classic car, what ever make or model, and only usuin it twice a year or so, like people cant see the point in me bangering classic cars.
Here is one of the ways I love to use my XK150.XK trackday at Goodwood part 2

For me personally I see a difference between an XK150 and a 420 and not just as a 150 owner. There are not enough people interested in 420s to save all the ones that easily savable. It take very little work to be required on a 420 before it would be cheaper to just go and buy a better one. So unless there is some emotional attachment to the car then there are still plenty of 420s dying.
140FHC and 150FHC are in a more difficult situation. These can be in a state where they are beyond economic repair but I think there are probably enough people who are prepared to do the work themselves to get one back on the road, not all XK owners/admirers can afford to just go and buy one which is already in good condition.
In the case of your 150, obviously I can not be sure, I didn't see the car but from your description it sounds like it wouldn't not have been beyond repair, certainly when first seen. When you cut the roof, was the front rail touched? This is where the strength is, the rest is a simple panel. It is my opinion that this car could have given years of pleasure to someone who would have loved to put it back on the road, rather than giving you a few months of pleasure/grief while you sorted it and then a few minutes of pleasure on the track. This is just my opinion.
If it had been offered for sale and no one had wanted to do the work then sure do what you will.
In the case of a 420, I think the chance of someone wanting to do the work to rescue a scabby one are remote.
You are not the only person to have stirred up people in this forum about "mistreating" a classic car. At least you have been prepared to come here to the group and talk to us about it. A little while ago there are a series of postings about an Aston Martin DB2 that is rusting away in a front garden. All sorts of people have offered to buy the car but the guy in the house is not interested, and so it sits there rotting.

I may not ahve changed anyone's opinions, but tim trying to show that een though it was banger raced, atleast it had its fair share on the track, i had great fun, and its now been sold, which unfortunatly means the running gear and engine is gonna be taken off, and the rest is weighed into the crusher.
