Nothing illustrates this thread better than that photo. Both are the ‘big car’ from the Volvo range, so it is comparing like with like. People used to buy a Volvo estate if they needed a large safe vehicle with space for people and to carry stuff. Now they buy a 4x4 the size of a truck.

Take the MX5 and Viper as the classics, compared to the modern Challenger. Yes the Challenger is a 4 seater but it's still massive. The other surprise was how close in size the MX5 and Viper are, The Viper is basically MX5 size with extra bonnet. In width, the Viper is a lot wider.

No way... In my head the Viper is a massive and unwieldy beast, but it looks like a scale model there?!

That’s massively screwing with my head.

The first time I saw one on the road I was amazed at how small they are. Seem much smaller than a Corvette, which one would think would be a logical comparison, rather than a Miata.

same here, wow, I collect that picture to remind me that a Viper is not to big, I look sometimes at those latest Vipers from 2016? or so, those manual and 635 hp or something like that, they still look big in the pictures, but seeing this and that mazda, hm... interesting haha.

and yeah such Challenger I've seen a few for real on a corvette meeting, also the latest corvette, way way way to big for me, don't like them, I wanted to be sure so I went to such meeting day with my Z3 s65 haha, people say, wow thats a nice sound and thumbs up, which Chevy V8 do you have under the bonnet some in that line asked me, I said a BMW M3 V8 lol, you should see their faces, I had to park at the end of the field hehe

The photo of the side view could be deceptive, as any lens distortion from the wide angle will make things appear bigger towards the edge of the image and smaller in the middle.

NB MX5 and MK2 Viper, but they're similar from the back bumper to the windscreen base, then the Viper has more bonnet.

ah thanks, that makes sence since the viper needs that V10 and some extra cooling spaee vs i4

is the latest model as long as this model? I mean the say 2016 model the one with 635hp or something like that.

must be great to drive that power and a manual, also the best Viper yet so some say (testers)

Tbh it came out three decades back when the average car was a lot smaller, scale is still shocking when parked next to modern cars.

I used to have a photo on my phone I had taken of an S1 Elan parked next to an S1 Elise, the Elise looked positively bloated next to the old Elan - not something that happens every day.

Everything looks bloated next to Elan’s though. They look like little pedal cars in modern traffic.

I say that as an Elan fan BTW.

Elans are very narrow, Elise are quite 'squat' in proportions compared.

It's not all one way. The old Citroen Ami is much bigger than the new one. Its also cheaper, faster, has a longer range, is more comfortable, carries more people and stuff, lasts longer...

This Ami 8 Break is our family car in the summer, I wouldn't swap it for anything.

Progress?
