That 525e or (eta) is definitely the economy model, it had a specially tuned 6 cylinder with a rather laid back 130 bhp and surprisingly an autobox. The fast-ish models all ended in i, 528i, 535i, M535i well except the M5.
And for a bonus point I can tell you that the 525e had a 2.7 capacity. In the US, the car was sold as the 528e with the exact same engine. Ultra long gearing in 4th (top) I recall. Wikipedia said:
M20B27
The 2693 cc M20B27 was designed for efficiency (thus the e for the Greek letter eta in 325e) and low-rev torque.[22] Compared with the M20B25, the stroke is increased from 75 mm (3.0 in) to 81 mm (3.2 in).[21]
Power output is 121 hp (90 kW) at 4,250 rpm for M20B27 engines produced up until 1987 and 127 hp (95 kW) at 4,800 rpm for the "325es" model produced in 1988.[21] Peak torque is 170 lb·ft (230 N·m) at 3,250 rpm for M20B27 engines. In 1987, the fuel injection was upgraded from Motronic 1.0 to Motronic 1.1/1.3.[21]
Applications:
1982–1988 E30 325/325e/325es
1982–1988 E28 525e (or 528e in the US)

Yeah, but, no, but...
It's the Germans and their letter designations. On the Mercedes SLK230 Kompressor, for example, the K doesn't stand for Compressor it stands for Coupe.
K stands for "Kurz" (short) doesn't it? Think back to the mighty pre-war Elefant blower SSK's, Dicky! It's the Germans and their letter designations. On the Mercedes SLK230 Kompressor, for example, the K doesn't stand for Compressor it stands for Coupe.
