Tonight there is at 9pm a programme on the Munich air crash BBC1
Also gives some tips on how to survive disasters.

Don't be a prat - tell that to the survivors. Even if you are not a Man U fan, they had some of their generations best players - most of them would have made great internationals as well as club players. If you can't say anything good, best say nothing

Argh, i just read the title and thought "shit not again", i dont support Man U, dont even like Man U, but it was a terrible accident and they were all human beings with families.

I wouldn't think that there are many relevant tips about what to do if caught up in a plane crash involving an Airspeed Ambassador. The last Ambassador flew in 1972 and there are no airliners of that era around these days.

Aha! You might get run over whilst exiting your Cherokee. Then you might wake up in dodgy gear & need to make an emergency flight.

I once met the Blanchflower who survived the crash - I saw him when I was a newly qualified doctor, and I asked him about his severely damaged knee - he casually remarked "Oh, I got that in an aircrash many years ago". I felt such a fool when I later realised who he was.

i watched some of this, seems bloody stupid how, after trying to take off twice and failing he still takes off the third time. but i think that was the choice of the team wasn't it?

Far less was understood about the effects of ice on wings and slush on runways back in 1958. In fact, this accident caused certicators of airliners to include snow and slush tests in new airliners certification tests before they issued a Certificate of Airworthiness to a new type of airliner.
Also, at that time, most British airline aircrew were ex WW2 era RAF or Royal Navy so they had a far more independent "press on" atitude compared to the more "corporate" pilots of today. Captain Tain lost his job - many say unfairly, over this incident. I think BA (the modern successor to BEA) eventually exonetrated him of all blame - after he had died, unfortunately.

Of course not. Despite hating football, I can imagine that the lyrics will not (in any way) be appropriate or complimentary. Its amazing that 50-odd years ago football fans still show such disgusting lack of respect to their fellow sportsmen and their fans.

Unfortunetly the Man Utd fans weren't that nice when The plane carrying the Leeds squad in the O'Leary era just managed to avoid crashing on take-off. In isolation the song is sick, it is unfortunetly only part of the "banter" between BOTH sets of fans.

Nobody died in that incident though and it served to just shut the Leeds fans up, if only for a game or two. It doesn't need bringing up on this thread though, does it?

Of course I never saw Duncan Edwards or any of that era play in the flesh, but my dad told me he was head and shoulders above anything else on a football field. An old time version of Gazza in his prime - only better.
Captain of England at 19 or something wasn't he - or was it just playing for them?
Could head, kick with both feet, tackle, lead a team, score goals - who knows how great he would have been ...
Terrible shame.

I'm not a United fan and know the story of the crash, but I was a amazed to learn that Duncan Edwards survived the crash and lived for 13 (or something) days before he died. That's just all the more tragic....
