Today is the last day that tolls will be charged on bridges in Scotland:

http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2008/01/3...

So why does this sort of thing never happen in England? We have the Dartford bridge, bought and paid for countless times, but still they charge, still causing congestion and emmisions.

The Dartford bridge and most others in England still have tolls to support the abolition of tolls in scotland.

Transport is a devolved issue to scotland. In England it comes under the British Parliament.

Nice. Of course the money will have to come from somewhere as it did with the abolition of tuition fees.

That 'somewhere' is always England.

Oh, please. Surely the bridge tolls in England are paying for our education and health systems, too.

In fact, i think my free milk at school when I was a kid had "Courtesy of Humberside drivers" written on the side.

Sheesh.

Mind you of course the money that would have gained from the Tolls will now come out of General Taxation.

Things can only get better. It has been suggested scotland mades a bid to move the border 20 miles south and take control of Berwick.

Well spotted. The argument put forward for scrapping the tolls, was that it was unfair on the residents of Fife and surrounding areas to have to pay to get back from Edinburgh.

Now residents of Aberdeen, Glasgow , John O'Groats etc can feel happy that they are paying for said Fifers' return journeys.

What you save, someone else loses. Whoopeee.

I asked my local MP why the toll was still in place at the Dartford bridge, despite the goverment stating years back the toll would stop when they had funds for future maintainence, which was reached 5 years ago I think. His reply was that the department of ing up roads thought that keeping a toll would reduce traffic.... I didn't even bother with a reply.

If you don't reply then they aren't going to do anything about it.....

To be honest:

I've just spent the past 30 mins out on the balcony watching the sky here in the north west Highlands. Tolls or no tolls - some places are great to live and some places are crap.

I lived in London for 30 years and now I've moved, I see the sky.

End of story.

Scotland isn't even a client state as it isn't a state.

It is locked firmly onto the welfare cash teat of England yet it has enough political latitude to pull these kinds of stunts.

As a result I am a staunch Scottish Nationalist.

Not as far as north as you, but biglaugh Scotland is a fine place to be in. And having been up your way on my cycle journey from Applecross, up the mountain, (heading East) and looked down on your patch, it must be gods gift to us. And being born and brought up in London, would never live there again, sorry, no sir.
