Google video provides a link to download the video without having to piss about, and provides videos in a halfway decent format. Youtube deliberately tries to make it difficult to download the videos and only provides them in censored .flv with shite quality. With any luck Google will Googleise Youtube and make it into a useful site instead of a pain in the arse as it is at the moment.

Hope they'll change the shite name as well, though I doubt it. "Youtube" is not only meaningless but such a stupid word that it's irritating to read and embarrassing to type.

I read that YouTube costs an absolute fortune to run in terms of bandwidth, etc.

If that's true about the $11m investment that was used to start it up, then will some of that £800million+ be shared out to investors?

I saw a whole 15 minute extract from one of the recent editions of "Motor Films Quarterly" posted on YouTube a few weeks ago. I am sure the two individuals who produce these DVDs (I know one of them) will be watching what YouTube do most carefully.

I have seen a lot of stuff on there (youtube), mainly in crash comps, etc, that I know damn well hasn't been authorised by the copyright holder. The problem is firstly tracking down who BooBies967 or whoever posted it up. Then you have to find out if they are worth sueing, then you have to act on all the other breaches. It's ultimately not worth it.

I find it rather hard to believe that you couldn't go after YouTube in those circumstances. The copyrighted material is held on YouTube's servers and YouTube is streaming it on request to anyone who wants to see it. That has got to be a breach of copyright. For example, no one would claim that you could sell copies of a pirated DVD just because you were copying a pirate and not an original DVD.

And they said the dot com boom was over
Broadband is apparently is fueling a new dotcom boom with people able to watch videos (a la YouTube) and contact each other (a la MySpace)

As far as I am aware it works off google words....therefore people are able to comment on the videos they have watched below each individual video.
Yes, that is how it works, the same as with Gmail. It picks out words in your emails and then displays advertising banners (or at least links) next to your messages.

Along with $11m of investment. They didnt set it up in their spare time!
Yes they did. They both worked for PayPal and wanted an easy way to show videos between their group of friends after dinner party. It began just as a thing for their friends, Chen did the programming and Hurley sorted out how it should look etc.

They have 20% each, so about 180mill each. Not bad for 20months work.

The name, website, and the fact that a hell of a lot of people use it.
