Apparently, they make them (or the newer version) in a factory in Bulgaria, not far from the ski resorts. We've been told by several locals that for a small amount you can go to the factory and "test fire" them on their range. We keep meaning to get ourselves down there and fire off a few clips, but have always had too much fun on the slopes to get away

The comment relating to hiding in the bushes, above, is a bit odd, since a round is chambered in single shot. No obvious reason to switch to safe from that point, if you're in position rather than on the move

well, if your in a sniper position waiting for a specific target in a specific location, then yes i see your point...

however, in most cases you will be moving, or be prepared to adjust your position, and you really want to have the rifle 'safe' in those situations!

Snipers don't use AKs.

Snipers use Dragunov SVD's. Civilian version is called Tigr

(or even better rifles) They do look a little like AK's to the inexperienced, but they are not.

I didnt mean 'literal' sniper.. (obviously, since its not a long range sniper rifle) I meant an ordinary soilder in a position to 'pick off' a target...

stop being so pedantic

Of course the Dragunov uses a better round, ie. 7.62 x 54. I think the L42 is better.

The 50 cal is best, see below:

real or not, not something that needs to be posted in this thread

There were many 'gold plated' weapons that came back from Iraq. The vandals had them deactivated - turning many thousand of pounds worth of kit into 25p worth of scrap.

I own one of these made by Arsenal in Bulgaria, it has a milled receiver and a chromed lined match grade barrel (not heavy) and it groups under 2" at 100 yards. Not bad for a semi-auto AK variant.

The genius behind the AK is its simplicity...

Its simple, bulky internals with huge gaps - but that means it fires everytime, unlike the M-16 or SA-80 which completley stop functioning if a single grain of sand gets into the mechanism..

However, its completley inaccurate, and relies on the high fire rate and spread to take care of the target...

You forgot that the AKs use no springs, all wound cables instead. Very reliable.

Mine is a pre-ban Norinco, stamped. Came with 3 30 round mags and Bayonet. Paid circa $250 for it new and it's worth right now is around $1250-$1700. Doing better than my stock investments.

In a CQB the AK has a harder punch than the M16 due to the larger calibre round, thats why some U.S troops in vietnam swapped M16,s for AK,s but there was the M16 reliablity issue as well.It was found that if you got hit with an AK and went down you stayed down. Not nesserally the case with the 5.56mm M16.

isnt there a .762 version of the M16/M4 too called the AR10 i think?, i wasnt commenting on which was a better gun, i couldnt honestly tell you having never fired either, a 12 bore shotgun doing clay pigeon and a Beretta 92F on a range(shortly before the handgun ban so i was only 13 or 14) is my limit of shooting experience, i just meaant before that the M4 is more astheticly pleasing than the AK.

The thing about war is that after some research, they found something like 90% or more of bullets fired in battle miss dont hit anyone. Your average GI is a crap shot and the main purpose of their weapon is to keep the enemies head down as they advance, by shooting in his general direction.
This is the main reason NATO and everyone else switched to smaller bullets like the 5.56mm rather than the old style 7.62mm. Basically soldiers can carry more ammo around with the smaller bullet so they can shoot more. Those who actually need good stopping power like snipers still use 7.65mm bullets or higher. The most desirable weapon in Vietnam and other close combat situations was actually a decent pump action or automatic shotgun, but they are really only good for quite close range and pretty useless outside of that, especially with bodyarmour in the equation.

Armalite AR-10s are available in .308 (7.62mm) or .243 (6mm).

The .243 Winchester is the 7.62 X 51mm necked down to 6mm roughly speaking. SAAMI chambers are different than NATO/ Military chambers.
