I didn't belt him properly because I didn't particularly want to be responsible for some horrible injury. I could have back-kicked him in the face, knocked him out and caused him to fracture his skull on the pavement.

My training did work. He didn't land any punches on me, and I successfully walked away un-injured. That's the point in the end, no?

yes

Just ashame you couldnt have given him more of a smacking about! hehe

My son is a student in Edinburgh and within a month of arriving three diffrent men tried to fight with him for no reasons other than being in the same street as them. Some even crossed the road to have a go. He must have that 'look'. He ignored them and kept walking and they didn't follow. Bit of you wishes they had because for the past 10 years he has been spending 3 nights a week at Aikido.

What is it with people that they want to fight with strangers, or to be more to the point they want to hit strangers, I am guessing they are ill equipped to fight properly and would run to the cops if they gotthe worst of it.

Then I apologise that my p155 poor training allowed me to get hit.

No offence, but that sentence doesn't make much sense to me. I don't know what you're getting at. All I was saying was that it could have been worse if Raify didn't know what he was doing - I'm not sure how that is a particularly contentious position to take.

Scared of your own strength etc?
Come on now Raify. Pack it in.
I've restrained myself so far but I can't hold back any more.
If you are a black belt then you could have given that wine-tramp a big enough hiding to stop him doing it to anyone else ever again.
Now he's come up against a black-belt and got away unscathed having kicked you repeatedly in the back and head and spat on you. So what happens when he next gets pissed and feels a bit lairy? He picks on someone else who's probably much weaker than you and they get a proper hiding.
I think you are a coward.
I'm sorry but I do.

Perhaps he was thinking of the trouble he would land himself in if he did cause damage to the drunk bloke?

The police are so very nice and understanding about giving people a hiding nowadays...rolleyes

Who'd know it was him though?

I still do heavy bag work and could probably do someone quite a lot of damage, but I'm not registered anywhere. It's a myth.

If you think self-defence is just about not getting hit at all then I'm afraid you have no understanding of how real fighting actually works.

Come off it. Raify is in no way responsible for the future actions of another person, nor can he be expected to administer what you consider to be "preventative measures".

If you knew him you'd realise how utterly, utterly wrong this comment was.

I'm afraid you've done yourself no favours with this post, BSR.

Martial arts has nothing to do with fighting on the street. In martial arts the contestants are both fighting according to a set of rules, which goes right out of the window in a street fight. Not like youre going to line up, politely bow and first to get knocked over declared the winner, shake hands and head off is it.

Glad no serious harm done at any rate.

Don't expect an answer - he's probably already committed seppuku for having failed the PistonHeads Masters of Combat.

Ecks, I am taking this at post at face value, and I might not have done myself any favours with you but it is how I see it.
I disagree with you on this one.
Wankers like this piss-head get away with it time after time because noone fights back.
I do see it as Raify's duty to give him a hiding.
You obviously know him and read this situation differently but my opinion is based on what is posted here!

Personally I think battering someone to the point of not being able to "do it to anyone ever again" is the cowardly option. Far more mature to just do what was necessary to walk away. So he got a lucky kick in

Not that I can talk though, I'd have been diving into the nearest cab or legging it up the street. Again.

Well done chap. yes
It's good to give an agressive drunk a slap, and after all he did assault you first. In my opinion, good evidence of restraint by you in not turning his head into a lime jelly - self defence and nothing further very much on show.....

I appreciate that - I just thought the "coward" thing was a bit strong.

I don't agree with you that it is Raify's "duty" to give him a hiding, though, because that opens the door to vigilanteism and the administration of arbitrary punishment outside of the legal system. I don't think that's a road that anyone will be better off for having taken.
