Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum and i was just looking for a bit of advice.

I'm only 17 atm, but i plan on getting tattoo's when i am 18, i have plenty of ideas but there are 2 that i keep spinning round in my head;

- the first is the generic snakes around a sword, which when i designed thought was very original, but now as i have looked at other tattoo's seems very cliche, in a way i want to keep it, coz i thought it was original when designing it and still like it alot, but i was just looking for other opinions.

-the second is just an idea that i think could work but possibly not; its the idea of having a view through the eye of a needle looking at the gates of heaven, i have thought this through and think that for the detail to work the needle would need to be very large, and unless you only had the top and made the actual needle fade away (where you would have to explain what it was every time you showed someone) or had a huge needle it wouldnt work. so i was wondering could i have a large needle going down my arm, but have other tattoos incorporated into the needle? or would scale be an issue because the needle is so big, would everything else need to be? If you could tell me your opinions i would appreciate that alot.

Thanks alot,
James

p.s. here is the design for my first tattoo the banner will state "Bro's Before Hoes (cliche but it means alot to me)

What is the significance of the eye of the needle dude? Not too sure how that would look on your arm.

That is quite a nice design you have there, new look at a traditional old school snakes and swords idea. How big do you want it, just a forearm size? You might find the detail suffers a bit at that size.

I had my first two full-forearm tats aged 16, and have never regretted either of them. They weren't original ideas, just some traditional flash off the tattoo shop wall. I'm 48 now, had them recoloured about 10 years ago, and have two full sleeves worked around them now.

Could you not draw/print the design out onto paper to scale and see how it looks - maybe do it on something see through?

I was thinking a fairly large back piece, problem is i have no decent software for blowing it up to that size without pixelating.

And the eye of the needle is because of what it says in the bible about its easier for a camel to go throguh the eye of a needle than a rich man to get through the gates of heaven. I dont think it will work though, so im gonna drop that idea.

I like the whole deisgn thing, but might be a little more reticent about the wording on the banner. While I'm sure the design will age nicely (its not a set of stars, or a celtic fashion statement, the phrase Bro's before Ho's will a)need quite careful grammatical planning to avoid people assuming you love Matt & Luke Goss over your garden tools and b)a bit of thought for the future, as you know what - hoes are quite lovely things occasionally.wink

Yes, you and everyone elso on benefits.

All these designs - would you happily have them painted on the bonnet of your car or the side of your house? I would guess not - because it would look completely ridiculous - yet you're happy to have them permanently attached to your body? Weird.

On the wording of Bro's Before Hoes, i would make sure it is spelt exactly like that, as it would be ridiculous to be spelt wrong or grammatically incorrect.

And tbh, i don't think people poking fun at the "me loving boys" etc will get to me, coz its more of a personal thing, so anyone can say what they want, its how i feel that counts.

Which is what it should be with all tattoos IMO.

Have you ever been with a 'hoe', used her services, paid for sex, got to know any hookers, had any experiences good or bad?

I'm honestly curious why the 'Bros before Hoes' is such a powerful statement for someone so young.

Such a wording on a tattoo will give you a great many advantages in life too. In matters of employment, the heart and personal advancement, it will stand you in good stead. When girls read yout moto they'll realise you are a gentleman of the highest calibre and you'll love and cherish them for ever. And not be some sort of mysogenistic bully. Oh yes. And if you come to me for a job, then don't even bother with a CV or references, you are clearly a thinking man of taste and intelligence, not a thick idiot who thinks he's from the LA hood (rather than Barnsley/Essex/Kettering or where ever); the job's yours old son and your broom's in the cupboard...

Oh yes, I'd go ahead with that one if I was you, provided you're happy to be treated as a moron for the rest of your life.

Obviously its entirely up to you, but have you considered a latin script instead of 'Bro's before Hoes'?

That just seems like it'll be incredibly cheesy in a few years time when you realise you're not actually Fiddy Diddy Iced Schizzle or whoever.

Just as an example:

Friends before all others, in Latin:

amicitia pro totus alius

Still says what you want it to, still has the meaning, but it also has an element of mystery to it, and more people will ask what it means...

Try out some other translations, i did it here:

You are taking the phrase far too literally.

To me "Bro's Before Hoes" means friends before spouses it might not be the conventional wording that you'd expect someone from Surrey to have but in my group of friends its a commonly used phrase and it means a lot to me, and it brings me back to my original point that its not what other people think, it's what i think.

I have never used the services of a hoe and i never intend to.

Thanks for the advice about Latin scripts and things, but I'm not into Latin or other languages, I'm not one for getting 'love' in Chinese on my arm etc coz i don't read or know the language, therefore i think I'll stick to what i have chosen, cheers anyway.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure that the plural of ho as in prostitute is hoes.

Coz Hos sounds like it should be said hoz. and it definitely wouldn't have an apostrophe coz it's not an abbreviation.

I might be wrong, anyone?

why would an apostrophe apply to an abbreviation.

it should read...bros before hos i reckon.

there wouldnt be an apostrophe on bros because it's just a plural.

Don't make broad assumptions on what i have or haven't done. You're right, i haven't had any experience with wes.

Abbreviations always have apostrophes so it would definitely be Bro's, like in don't or won't or can't etc.

And like i said, it's personal to me, i don't care what other people think of what i'll have on me.

I might be making a big mistake, but everyone does, i'll learn from it. And, if it gets to me that much, ill cover it up.

Everyone's a critic.
