ok this is bugging me and my boss too. Not the fact of what caused it as such, but more so why was UK Lincolnshire named as the epicentre????
Because Lincolnshire was the epicentre. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. Nothing whatsoever to do with the continental plates moving around. All rocks have lines and planes of weakness in them. Stresses build up for whatever reason (I would guess pressure and thermal stresses induced by the core) and eventually something gives way and off it goes. I would love to know just how much movement was experienced. 1mm? 1cm? 10cm?

It was all very British wasn't it? I half expected Alan Bennett to appear and say something like "Ooh dear, I hope Thora's willowpattern is alright. She's been a martyr to it since the blitz". Millions of people making cups of tea at 1am, tutting a bit and going back to bed. Then in the morning lots of people saying "well I felt something but I thought it was Bernard's flatulence".

So global warming is the cause then!

"The Government is to introduce a new earth quake tax, people who live within 20 miles of an epicenter will have to pay a £400 earthquake tax. Environment minister spokesperson, Gaia Otterthrottler, said that the only way to stop this earth quake behaviour was to tax those responsible.."

yes There is middle class handwringing going on all across the third world, coffee mornings are being held en-masse and parliamentary backbenchers and council leaders are preparing for factfinding missions to Market Rasen.
