For other folks political views.

A lot of threads on here, as you would expect with an election coming up, but regardless of how anyone will vote, on the whole I would respect their political viewpoint, especially if it was for a mainstream political party and not for anything particularly nasty or repugnant.

Now it is blindingly obvious that the vast majority of PH'ers are ultra right wing conservative supporters. But what has been noticeable is that if any minority PH'er has had the temerity to disagree with this generally pro-conservative stance, they have been derided as much as the politicians themselves. There have been a few instances that have quite frankly been bang out of order and the strength of vitriol subsequent thereof has not been worthy (at least, I have winced at a few exchanges anyway).

Only one day to go folks, so any chance of any respect for others with a differing viewpoint?

I mean, it's not as if it matters or makes a difference is it?

"Keyboard Warriors" is a phrase I read (on here somewhere) quite recently... I think that sums it up well in some instances.

I dont think there's anything wrong with vigorous debate.

I get called all sorts on these political threads for my perceived right wing views and I dont care at all. As long as they dont mind if I dish it back....................................

I would have to agree, having been on the end of some wincing exchanges. I would say though, that I do actually respect some of the people that I have had jousts with, like Alexkp and Jaglover, but then again there are some people who I just can't understand, and perhaps never will.

Thing to remember about this site is that the demographic is totally skewed one way, and therefore, whenever anyone goes against the consensus, it is perceived in a magnified way.

In general most things are light hearted and fair. However, there have been instances in the past where some peoples political opinions have been ridiculed and the minority in question have been insulted to the point of abuse. Some PH members have been reported for such abuse, though we are unlikely to have them admit to this of course!!!

Differing opinions is what makes the world go around and its perfectly fine to debate them. What distrubs me is that it gets so personal so quickly. I understand that feelings run high, especially at this time, but we are all people at the end and it shouldnt matter that much.

However, I would counter my own argument with the strange psychology which humans show when using internet fora. People hide behind persona and express views and opinions which they would never mention to anyone else. As the old cartoon about the Internet went - "no one knows you are a dog", said the dog.....

The vast majority of people on PH are exactly who they say they are. Only a select few hide themselves behind a persona of whom they want to be. And fewer still express opinions that even their best friends have never heard them say. Then there are the trolls, but thats another point.....

Why thank you 968-I've enjoyed chatting to you as well-it is always good to have your beliefs challenged.

Actually I am a very non-confrontational person-so I do not discus politics with those close to me-such as my parents who are Labour supporters.

too many write on here the same as some people drive.

full of bravado and bluster, but would never talk like that face to face, in the same way people would never walk like they drive on the highway.

tolerance would be nice from all. sometimes a simple smiley does not take all the sting from the words used.

Mine are staunch Tories - maybe we were mixed up at birth? Where were you in July 1968 JL - if the answer is a small North Wales hospital I think we should both get in touch with the News of the World...that would make me English, but at least you would have a half decent rugby team to support.

I'm not sure about 'ultra'. It's just the opposite to socialism. Left, right. Dumbing down or meritocracy. That's all. The weird thing is that anyone who mentions the words 'right wing' is suddenly likened to Hitler. Someone who wanted to fly a Union Flag on St George's Day was likened to the BNP. That's brainless soundbyte fashion for you (it helps if you control the media too...)

I hope any derision has been kept sensible and based on fact. I find it abhorrent when people start hurling stupid abuse, rolling eyes and saying 'tosser'.

Have to agree which I one of the reasons I have 'bit my tongue' a few times when I would have dearly loved to have flamed some.

I can think of only a couple of occasions when I have ‘lowered’ myself to the point of telling someone to Foxtrot Oscar, then again one was a troll and the other Burciebabe () (Think we have made up now, unless I try to offer him a cigarette ) Oh, and I think I might have upset SimpoTwo a few months ago…

Strong views are welcome, even if only so that we can try to understand why someone would hold these views, a little light ‘joshing’ or even mild abuse can be entertaining but if it’s bad enough to get you sin binned or unprovoked vitriol, well sir your can go forth and multiply

Never noticed!
One good tip for avoiding a flame war is to launch an attack then leg it and read other forums for a day or two until the dust settles. Guerilla warfare

You pays yer money and takes yer choice - if you want to post on a website with an "ultra right wing conservative" bias, what would you expect? Nothing wrong with airing your views, and I love a decent bit of opposite lock to get my teeth into!
