A tonight Special on ITV right now.

There was a thread about this on here a few weeks back with links to camera phone footage of people carrying out these attacks, well it seems the craze has spread through the country.

Not pleasant viewing, especially when the perpetrators find it so funny.

OMG these so called happy slappers set a man on fire who had fallen asleep in a bus shelter and then filmed it

They got 6 and a half years each.

They were filmed laughing and joking whilst doing it.

This is sickening.

That really is disgusting! Setting someone on fire and filming it? Knocking someone out with a traffic cone?

Insane. Totally insane.

Doubt you could retaliate, you would be the one who ends up behind bars. Such is the society we live in today.

True, just pointing out the injustice in society is all!

No wonder they can get away with it, because they have nothing to fear from the average law abiding citizen.

What does worry me though is that one day one of these scrotes is going to pick on the wrong person, and get themselves killed and/or maimed.

Why should it worry you?

Sounds like they should have gotten a whole lot more than 6 years for attempted murder. Did he survive?
What's worse is that they probably started small and moved up to humans. They're the future sociopaths.

When the victims start believing that the law, and those who enforce it, no longer protects them, they are going to take things into their own hands. I think it's a short matter of time before people get frustrated with it all. There are too many incidents of kids killed by convicted child molestors, wives and ex-wives killed by former spouses, people killed by gangs and criminal mischief. Punishment should be reasonable, adequate, and sufficiently deterrent. If some people have to be locked up forever for the safety of the rest of us, so be it. I'd pay extra for that. They can work in the prison making license plates to pay for their room and board.

Good for you, Mungo. Be careful out there. Of course, odds are you're smarter and tougher than they are.

You really can't go anywhere on your own anymore.

About ten years ago there was a film about gangs in america.

Can't remember the title but in one scene a young kid kills a shop owner and steels the shops security camera tape.
He then watches it with his mates and they all have a laugh watching it over and over.

This always springs to mind when I hear of happy slapping.

scared but happy

Nicked someone for this last night.

It's getting worse now too. I have dealt with several assaults in my town of people being victim to this... normally happens in our cities parks.

You need to be really aware these days walking around in public. Knowing how to fight by doing martial arts or boxing has a lot of merit to it too! Anyone is allowed to use force to defend themselves - it's a legal right

I'm plugging to do an undercover operation where I can be the "victim" "Come to daddy young scrotes"

Another term the scrotes use for it is "Banging out"

Good for you, mate. The buggers deserve it.

I have to say - if someone rushed up to me with the intent of slapping me - I'm afraid I'd react very badly indeed. Probably by delivering a sound kicking and smashing their cameraphone to pieces.

This may not be legal or right (I'm glad its legal to use force to defend oneself) but it *is* how I'd react. I'm afraid any defence of "It was just a joke!" would be met with "So is this....whack."

Did anyone here used to play dead arm or dead legs with the friends ?

Seems this is similar, if its amongst a group of mates then I have no problem. But to do it on strangers is simply not on and is an assault.

Well, we could start a trend of chav-beating.

(Note to guest visitor Guardian readers: this is purely humour and not intended to encourage upstanding members of society to take matters into their own hands to rid this country of useless so-called humans. So F**K OFF!) *coff*

This is vile despicable cowardly bullying behaviour of the worst kind as they seem to be picking on those least aware or able to defend themselves. As Mungo notes though, there is a need for street awareness as well. This is the first thing you will be taught on any good self defence course. The lady that was with the blond guy who was sitting down when he was smacked, bursting his eardrum, clocked the attackers but failed to realise something was amiss. You may not have a travelling option other than the night bus, but falling asleep on it is not wise.

Doesn't this trace itself back to the Tango ads with the bald orange man slapping Tango drinkers? Seem to recall it started then.

I really do hope one of these C**ts "happy slaps" an escaped mental paitent who then beats said "happy slapper" to death with his/her bare hands.
Won't be so f**king funny for 'em then.

We watched open mouthed last night, in total disbelief.

That poor guy they set alight, showing his burns, terrible & shocking. six & a half years as punishment?
It's time the punishment is tailored to the crime.

Yes it is time but it will take allot of work to reach it. For starters the prisons are packed already with current lenient sentences, due to the sheer amount of scum in this country.

The starting point must be a massive prison building programme, and then fixed penalties so soft out of touch judges have to impose proper punishments.
