three years in Angola , Lybia and a handful of other bloody awful places on this god forsaken continant.
98% of the money raised from the caring people of the rich countries will go to the corrupt few that have the power. so don't think that your couple of pounds donated will feed some starving child in the DCR ,it won't, exactly the same as the last live aid farce where fat rich muscians patted themselves on the back and walked away with a knighthood after doing sod all good down here.

Not to mention, no matter how much cash you float down there, or how much debt you forgive, you haven't changed the culture one iota. And sory if this is inflammatory, but much of the culture there just isn't condusive to a free market capitalist economy the way our Norther hemisphere's culture.

That's not a bad thing, or an indictment, but unless you get rid of the corruption as Simon said, and figure out a way to change the way millions of people think, all you get today is a concert and a good feeling that doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

so what should we do? Ignore the problem, pretend it isn't happening and hope it goes away on it's own.

Or maybe some bloke with a big mouth who is totally enraged that where you're born can dictate whether or not you reach your thirtieth birthday, could get some musician friends together to put on a few concerts around the world. The result of that might be that a load of people on a website discuss better ways of spending the money and criticise all the rich people who could "fix" the problem by giving up a years salary.

Hey, you could even set up a website and get them to add their names to a list (www.live8live.com/whatsitabout/index.shtml) and present it to some world leaders the next time they get together.

Alternatively, you could just sit and complain that we pay too much tax already!

Well said old chap the problems in Africa have been caused by three things in the main

1) Western Imperialism, BG is no better telling the African what to do
2) Greedy Africans
3) Rather bad weather

I don't think siwes was saying all irish men are stupid (they may be, but i don't know .. I don't actually know any irish men ..) .. but that in his opinion this particular irish man is especially stupid in his blind belief that a few has-been popsters can do any good, other than raise public awareness of course.
i generally disagree with siwes, but on this occasion i think he's well into "nail on head" territory, including the derogatory comment which was singularly targetted and not a general stereotype comment i feel ... just because you find stereotyping offensive doesn't mean you should expect other people to not do it of course, that would be tantamount to dictating and I can't be the only person to see the irony in this ...

I think it's slightly upsetting that charity has to be turned into a kind of fashion accesory (both literally and metaphorically) before people sit up and take notice.

But I'm a total hypocrite.

I gave £1.50 to charity last night to a beautiful girl in a rather short skirt. I got a Chuppa Chups (or whatever) lolly for my trouble. Bloody expensive lolly, but whoever thought of sending gorgeous females out to collect money from slightly intoxicated males is clearly some kind of genius. Come to think of it, I don't even know what charity it was for...

Well sadly whatever it is about has gone right past me. I gave up listening to overpaid celebrities telling me what charitable works I should do a long time ago, and have paid scant attention to whatever trendy crusade the geld-ego is on this time.
