Spellings, I'm curious
Discussion
Our language is derived from a hotchpot of Latin, French, Saxon and many others.
Soap decends from Latin and was probably pronounced and spelt differently, evolving over time to accommodate the changing abilities of various settlers to pronounce certain words.
Pope is also a Latin derivative (obvously!) but IIRC, comes from something like "Papeal".
Also, when you think about it, if you were to spell Soap, Sope; you'd end up saying "Sop".
Now, can you all do page 43 for homework and make sure you bring it in on Monday!

You can check the etymology of a word at www.etymonline.com/index.php or in most dictionaries which might shed some light on this particular conundrum.
