Septoplasty - Anyone had one?
Discussion
After many years of one nostril breathing I'm biting the bullet and having the op. done on the NHS to straighten out my deviated septum. It's a general anaesthetic, a week off work, no football for 4 weeks and hopefully no smacks from kids, dogs etc but other than that what can I expect in the way of pain?
More importantly did it work for you?
Cheers

You could always do it yourself. All you need is a decent electric drill, preferably with 'hammer action' and a nice sharp drill bit. A few minutes discomfort an Bob's your uncle!
Seriously though, I have considered this (the op, not the drill!) as I suffer similar symptoms. Be good to hear from anyone who has had it done.

Had it done years ago after what sounds like the same problems - Doesn't hurt at all but you do look like a panda for several weeks afterwards - Expect serious bruising around the nose
Some would say looking like a panda would actually improve my appearance, so this isn't a problem. Good to hear you felt no pain, i'm assuming you had no pain releif at all.
When did you have it done and has it worked well for you?

Does this have any relevance?

Im not squeemish honest....
a few years ago i got a serious kicking in a club that spread my nose around my face, the floor the bar etc....
Went to the ENT hospital in Londinium, cant remember its name to sort out reconstruction.... doc described how it would require pretty much opening my nose like a banana to sort out.. I feel queasy typing it... suffice to say i left and didnt make an appt to have it completed!!
Enjoy your op :-)

Jeez, sorry to hear about that. I'm lucky that mine has just grown this way, mind you I did take a serious smack on it snowballing a number of years ago.
Hopefully I can report back that it's nowt to worry about.
I had this op about 10 years ago. I'd say it helped alot but did not completely solve the blocked up feeling. Sometimes late in the evening my nose can be bunged up for no apparent reason. I also need to blow my nose a few times a day, every day. I don't know whether both these are related to the original problem though. The nose blowing may be an alergy or something else.
I had the op on the NHS and they may have refined the technique. I'd suggest you take some extra "tampons". I stayed in the hospital overnight and they tie what I'd describe as a tampon around your head. The tampon sits under your nose to soak up the snot that continually runs out. However, being the NHS they only had so many tampons per patient. I'd find out if they still use them and take some extra if they do.
I don't remember the bruising being that bad though, ceratinly not panda like.

Thanks for the advice. I also have a hay fever and a dust allergy and was hoping the op. might improve this slightly as I'm sure the two are linked. The main thing is it helps with my breathing and ahem...my alledged snoring.
