It would appear so.

Can't think why anyone would want to hunt Polar Bear meself, though. And certainly not just for "the achievement". I'll bet it tastes dreadful, too. Pointless activity.

Aren't they endangered? (Don't know for sure.) Doing in endangered species is a crime in most countries...

What drives a man to want to do this sort of thing, it's beyond my comprehension?

Hopefully if he does kill one he'll eat it's liver, and that'll kill him.

So.....we make the badgers fight the polar bears? That wouldn't
work, surely - badgers are nocturnal...ah....like your thinking...
..long arctic winter nights...the badgers sneak up on the polar
bears under the cover of darkness. Nice.

Am I the only person who doesnt see a problem with this? Or is everyone else shutting up to avoid the inevitable flaming?

In all seriousness, assuming that hunting these isnt pushing a population over the edge, especially if funding works towards the bear conservation (as in several African countries where hunting permits pay for park wardens etc), whats the problem? Placing an economic value on a species often helps with its long term conservation - gives an incentive for people other than the huggy-feely brigade to support population growth.

Although personally I wouldnt want to try hunting a Polar Bear with anything less than a LAW or a grenade launcher... Even then, miss and you're history.

Bear hunting in the US is nutty enough, every year a few of the bears do turn the tables and make the hunter into the hunted - and IIRC the Polar Bear is substantially bigger and faster than the Grizzly.

The issue here is one of personal ethics. Those who see nothign wrong with hunting place this in a similar category as sport fishing - its a bigger animal - nothing more. The ethical position is the same.
Those who find it offensive, then fine, thats your moral decision to make. But please dont try and inflict that moral judgement on everyone else by force.

Reasoned arguement, rather than "its bad because I say so" wins people over to your point of view.

Criticly endangered, some WWF type orginisation is trying to get them classed as 'facing extinction' as so many now can't make the 160 mile swim from Canada to the icecaps to feed.

I'd like to see this tosser try and kill a Bear without a gun or tooled up in any way, see how hard he is without the weapons.

Ahah! So they are endangered then. Anyone stoopid enough to brag about doing one in for £15K is likely to find themselves locked up...

I suspect the only people of fending off a Polar Bear would be a battle-hardened Inuit hunter - and then only with a spear...and I'd put even money on the Bear.

Did you know they're one of the few animals that view human beings as prey?

I simply wouldn't consider messing with one of them, myself.

Sorry Lemming you're wrong. There is a distinct deficit in polar bears, and it will only get worse as the Arctic ice melt and they loose the ability to migrate across. Give them 30 or 40 years and they will be extinct or in a zoo only.

In Africa, such things as elephants on the other hand are in plentiful supply

Lemming: I haven't hunted anything in years - but I would still do so, quite happily. The reason I wouldn't consider hunting a Bear is I can't eat it - wouldn't consider harming something I wasn't going to eat (or had a very good other reason).

There is also the fact that its an endangered species. Hunting anything into extinction is utter madness. Who knows what value a species will have in the future? Losing biodiversity could cost humankind all kinds of advances one day in the future...and we'd never know! All the more reason to look after the species we do have.

I have thought through the ethical considerations very carefully - and am often flamed for them.

I hope I have made some reasoned points in the Bears' favour!

Oh dear! A bit close to the animal rights terrorists that lot. These people are as bad as the blindly-pro lot!

Lets not get into the cute and fluffy arguments here, eh? Hunting Polar Bears is wrong because they're endangered and its common sense to place stewardship of the planet's biodiversity ahead of the requirements of a particular group.

If there were lots and lots of them and they were a pest or very, very tasty I'd be arguing something different! But they aren't so I'm not.

If they are drowning you could just fish one out of the sea and save yourself £15K

Quite why anyone would want a stuffed polar bear in the house to scare the bejesus out of you each time you get up to raid the fridge at night I do not know.
