Right, Duxford is at N52deg 05' 39.52" W0deg 07' 43.19"

There are two Tornados parked at another base at N52 24' 18.18" W0 33' 58.86"

Several planes that I take to be military transports parked at N52 21' 44.74" W0 28' 49.92"

...and so on, all around Cambridge area.

But this one intrigues me: N52 05' 54.59" W0 03' 32.40"

which I found by accident having spotted the enormous and perfectly straight front lawn of the country house to the north-north-east, whilst searching for Duxford.
Is that one of the palaces, and what's the airbase? I can see where the runway has obviously been filled-in, but there's still a large apron etc... and there's a small twin jet fighter hiding in the trees...

Incidentally if you have a scout round Heathrow, there are two Concordes at their gates and a plane captured by the camera, just about to land on runway 09L...

Edit: for Dambusters fans, Scampton is at N53 18' 31.18" W0 33' 08.51"... but the image quality is pants just there.

I haven't checked Google Earth but you may have spotted Cambridge Airport. Marshalls do a lot of maintenance work there so get quite a variety of aircraft in - often military.

Edited to add - it's Basingbourn.

these images are quite old, at least a year, and more likely 18 months. there are building in work that have been knocked down for quite a while, yet are still shown in the photos.

The airbase is Bassingborne as mentioned above (Track days are regular there). Interestingly I noticed the long straight lawn the other night - huge feature.

I'm pretty sure it's Wimpole Hall which is open to the public.

Google Earth is fantastic for scrolling around but Google Maps has the advantage of map or satellite (or map overlay) so you can actually find out where these places are.

Definatly Wimpole hall. My route home from work takes me past both Bassingbourne and Wimpole.

Ben

p.s. shockingly bad surface for track days at Bassingbourne but quite good fun

If you turn on the right layers Google Earth will tell you as well.

OK, to add a maritime slant... Titanic's birthplace:

N54 36' 35.36" W5 54' 33.08"

Is that V-plane at Blackpool airport then? Was that the one on Ebay a while back or was that Southend...?

The Vulcan on e-bay was the BLackpool one. Sadly, it is largely a pile of rust and will probably disintegrate once moved.

Not every part of the UK has been covered to the same level of photgraphic detail it's still being updated and some areas are as much as 5 or possible even more years old now and others have no detail at all.

Although most people would probably think covering Hartlepool with a large piece of sellotape an improvement

Move just a bit right and up slightly to the dock just a short distance away you'll see the Royal Navy's only surving ship from the battle of Jutland in 1916, HMS Caroline a light Cruiser currently being used by the Sea Cadets but I think due to be properly restored now they are moving/moved into purpose built buildings.

Just right of here (doesn't seem to want to pinpoint it properly)

Yep, see it in the flesh (metal) every time I go to Shorts... N54 36' 44.55" W5 53' 21.82" ... AIUI the slipway where the Sunderland flying boats used to be launched.

And more Titanic interest.

The RMS Nomadic the only White Star liner in existance and the ship that was used by the Titanic on it's fateful voyage as it's tender to off load and embark passengers at Cherbourg.

N48 51' 42.70" E02 17' 36.45" When it was still in Paris

It's currently at Le Harve possibly being restored for a return to the Harland & Wolf docks in Belfast IIRC.
