Bloody hell. I'm the kind of person that's managed to live a life mostly devoid of any sort of dangerous excitement, save the odd Saturday shopping in Sainsburys. I knew that living, as a student, in Lenton, was always going to be interesting, given it's location between two of the nastiest areas in the country. And I like to make jokes about going to sleep to the sound of gun fire, but that's mostly to scare the freshers.

So waking up this morning to discover that some poor WPC has been shot a mere 100m from my house is...well, a little disconcerting. Sure, I knew, in my head, that people around here were nutcases, and I told my housemate the other week, after he tried to start a fight, that around these parts it's a really bad idea, cos you never know who's carrying what, but I never really believed that the nasty sonsofbitches would shoot at anyone except other nasty sonsofbitches.

And to top it all off, I can't do any work cos of all the helicopters buzzing round.

Agreed.

I had my car broken into a few weeks ago in Compton Acres (Near West Bridgford, and scarily close to Clifton) when I went for a quick drink after work with a couple of colleagues.

I did the "If I had come out of the pub ten minutes earlier, I might have caught them at it, and been able to sort them out!" thing (I am not to be messed with when I am pushed too far... so I have been told!) but one of my colleagues pointed out at the time that if I had of caught them, one of two things could easily happen.

a) I get into trouble for dishing out my own form of justice

or

b) I get a knife or a gun pulled on me.

I really do not like this City.

Never have.

Unfortunately, work dictates that I spend at least eight hours a day here.

Ignorant comments like that only make things worse. It's every other day

I worked in Nottingham for over a year, stayed in the centre and went out on the lash every night. Not once did we see any trouble & I only heared what sounded like gunshots once.

I wish I could say the same for my permenant address which is far scummier.

Personally I find Nottingham centre scummy at the weekend but you can't have everything

Has notts really got that bad in the last 10 year or so since I was a student there?

Ok there were always areas you avoided ( mine you i lived in new basford and then broxtowe!!!) like there are in any town, but it always seemed much safer than most big cities and the town centre was the only place i ever saw a wpc onher own at night...

I thought the majority of the gun crime was quite localised ?

Re the comment in BBC report about someone taking up the issue of the protection level in body armour.

Currently working on that and have made some degree of progress.

However the big problem is the necessity to include a rigid vital organs plate. The ones we have at the moment are fairly effective against lower powered weapons but something with a bit more kick still don't have a solution.

An additional problem for the female bib is that the plate is flat and ...errr.... WPCs tend not to be that flat in the ...errr..... busty substance regions.

This isn't a comment on the incindent - she was doing her job and the poor lass got in the way of some nasty characters, and I hope to god she's alright. I love it when I see bobbies round here, on foot or in the car, because I know it's a dangerous area and I'm glad for the extra reassurance.

But when you live here, you really do have to grin and bear it, and sometimes a little joke about Derby fans is a nice way to admit that it's not *the* worst city on earth - in fact, it's quite a nice one, just with some problems it's not being very successful in sorting out.

Anyway, what do you like about Nottingham so much you'd publicly defend it?
