I was going to post this in the 'Do somthing for someone' thread, but felt it probably merited its own arena.

So...

Would you give a total stranger who you had just met, the keys to your pride and joy (while picking it up from servicing)and encourage him to take it for a solo drive, on the basis that he seemed like a nice bloke, just so that he could experience the joy of said car as much as you can?

no..but I did lend wildfire my 6 month old fiat for a week after having only known him for about 3 weeks, I just thought he seemed like a decent sort..and he gave it back unscathed so I guess I was right

I really believe that some people post things without thinking first. This is a prime example.

Not even my other car, not even for valet parking.
Actually, even driving it up ramps if I go to a mechanic, it has got to be me who does it!

I would happily give a stranger the keys to my renault 5 - on teh proviso that they promised not to bring it back

My TVR - no way.

No way. But on the other hand I have left my keys with a garage with no knowlage of who will be driving and whether dounuts and burnouts will be part of the test drives

Surprised you can still do this with Health and Safety breathing down peoples backs. I haev done it when the MOT tester ws short handed, doesnt look that high from the ground but feel really high once you are up there in the car with the brakes off.

What about a rolling road would you not let them drive your car

They're not me so what rings my bell might flatten their battery.

I would consider it if in the right circumstances, sure.

Obviously I wouldn't to a random fat dribbling woman in the Tescos car park, but say if I was at Donington one day, met someone and spent a few hours with them (enough to be pretty convinced they're not a car thief or appalling driver) then I might.

Likewise if I booked my car into garage I am doing the same thing .

I suppose if your car is super-pristine or rare/old or over ~£20,000 you might be less inclined too.

When I bought my car, one seller who's car I went to look at chatted with me for 5 minutes, gave me the keys and just let me and my girlfriend go off for a drive alone! This was to me a random 23 year old, in a 200 bhp rear wheel drive car with LSD and no traction control.

I put £5 of petrol in it for him as a gesture, but didn't buy it as it had a very noisy transmission.

Yes, as long as he gave me his wallet (incl. all contents) as collateral should he crack it up or go to Texas with it. If the experience convinces him to save an old CRX from the scrapyard for his own, it was worth the wear and tear. Worst case scenario - he blows the motor and buys me a new one, worth <$350.

Odd question really. My little girl doesn't have any keys, she's only 4 months old.

Well, you're really not going to like this then.

It was a lovely 911. (still is), and it came back 15 minutes later with 'nice bloke' grinning from ear to ear.

Once was with a mate in Sainsburys car park in Crawley, the battery on his car had terminally expired. A kind chap in a new ish Shogun gave us the keys to drive to Halfords for a replacement whilst he and his son had breakfast, refused even to let us buy his meal. Nice chap if a little foolish as I set off at least 4 scameras on the way.

Not a cat in hells chance I would give someone I did not know the keys to mine, or actually most people I do.
