Are we sleep walking into a Dictatorship? C4 8pm tonight
Discussion
Channel 4 tonight at 8pm 'Dispatches'..... is the UK becoming a police state/ socialist dictatorship?
At last someone has made a programme addressing an issue that concerns almost everyone I know, that under the current authoritarian Labour government the UK is drifting dangerously close to becoming both a police state and a socialist dictatorship.
What is revealing to me is that it is not the BBC ( now the political broadcasting wing of the government in all but name ) but the private non state funded Channel 4 that is addressing the issue.
....the BBC are of course promoting a series of programmes that are addressing a much more pressing issue that our freedom and personal liberty.... that of the 'Greenhouse Effect' and why we must drive less.

Don't need a programme to tell you the answer
YES we are.
I know but what really irritates me is that if we had a conservative goverment in office the BBC would have made this programme years ago, as it is it's fallen to of all channels, C4 ( supposedly the channel of game shows and porn ).
I don't care whether the BBC is anti conservative or pro labour so long as they are able to impartially do there public duty....which they clearly are not.
We have been sleepwalking for a long time now, sooner or later the matron is going to wake us up and welcome us to our nightmare...

FWIW, there is a vote on C4's website about the privacy/security issue;

How things change - I sometimes think the BBC employees pensions are linked to how nice they are to Labour!
It was also C4 that broadcast the program about Greg Dyke and his side of the story as to why he was allowed to be the sacraficial lamb for the BBC.
Ooooh! Paranoia, mmm lovely. Pass it over will you?
Have you read your posts?
Are you seriously suggesting that we no longer have free speech and a free press/media?
If you don't like the government we have (and I'm no fan) vote them out of office, or does a turnout of 29% at the last election give you a clue?
We are bored with politics, there are insufficient differences between the parties for most people to bother voting. That is why there is a rise in 'radical' parties such as the extreme right wing/euro sceptic parties.
I think we are in far greater danger of seeing the likes of Nick Griffin and/or colleagues gain ground in the future, there's a politcal vacuum waiting to be filled.
Just my 2p you understand.

Let us merely say that I am concerned by the authoritarian tendencies of the current incumbent government, tendencies that are surely plain to anyone who pays any attention whatsoever to current affairs.

You're missing the point slightly.
There is piss poor turn out at elections because politics isn't "interesting" to the majority - they have their holidays, nice car and house and feel "safe", definitely a case of "I'm alright Jack", and they aren't looking at the bigger picture in terms of the assaults on personal liberty that this country is currently undergoing.
As an example - why does the governement need to keep a record of who I've phoned or emailed during the last 2 years - its none of their damn business. And don't trot out that ol shite about "terrorists". Without going through the content of the mail or calls then the information is useless as pre-emptive information, so why do they need to have it recorded that on 31 March 2005 I phoned my mum for 5 mins 23 secs at 13:32:24? Whose business is that?
It used to be OK to own a car and keep it on your drive, now you HAVE to notify the Governement that a) yo uown the car, b) whether you use the car or not and c) whether its insured or not. If I buy something and don't use it, whose business is it? Is it your business? My neighbours?
Thats why we are sleep walking into a whole pile of poo in terms of creeping loss of Civil Liberties. And its all done under the banner of "reasonableness". I mean, if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear ..... Baaaaaaaaaaaaa Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa sheeeeeeeeeeeeep and its only reasonabel that you should want to tell the G'ment that you're not using your car anymore etc etc etc ....

I did not say we no longer had a free speech or media, I said that the state broadcaster has developed a worryingly instituionalised support for the governing party. Leaving it to a commercial broadcaster to call the governments policies into question.
But as it happens yes I do think that the things that we can say freely without arrest have been curtailed sharply of late, you I presume do not.
When you say 'we' are bored of politics I assume that you are using the 'Royal We', you may be bored with politics but alot of other people here are not, and I wanted to draw there attention to the C4 programme, maybe even have some discussiom/debate about it.
If you find it boring, fine don't watch the programme, don't read this thread, and don't contribute to it.

Would you sacrifice your civil liberties for more security?
Yes 6%
No 92%
Unsure 2%
They'll still force it through though

I'm afraid they will, especially after they managed to get the ID bill through.
It is a major shame that even though many are unconvinced by some of this the Parliamentary Labour Party consists of a bunch of spineless sockpuppets.
Ive been saying for ages that the UK is becoming a police state. Cameras everywhere, ID cards, soon to be trackers in cars for "road price monitoring", you can't say anything with out getting locked up for offending someone or another.
Don't get me wrong I still love the UK and this government is doing reasonably well financially but civil liberties.......
