I've just bought a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx and want to get some detailed maps on the unit.

Does anyone know where I can purchase these maps online and download the maps - as opposed to having to wait a few days for delivery through the post.??

I'm hoping to go out on sunday and would love to have the maps by then.

Maybe someone here has a 'backup' copy

Any pocket pc running microsoft o/s will load the memory map handheld software for a gps moving map display. You can download the viewer free.

You can buy O/S 1:50,000 landranger. 1 1/4" per mile in old money
and 1:25,000 super detailed maps which show every field boundary. not cheap though

Mail me for more info

I'm pretty sure you'll need Garmin Mapsource type maps, not Memory Map OS maps for that unit as it is not a PDA. You'll probably have to buy the maps on CD as they're quite big in terms of memory. Your unit probably has 64mb of memory and won't hold the data for the whole of Britain. Only way I can think of getting it for sunday is to see if you can find it in a shop somewhere nearby?

I spoke to the manager in Blacks Camping in Cardiff on the phone today, and told him what GPS device I have.

He told me that the Memory Map OS maps ARE compatible - they can be viewed on the Garmin unit and also comes with software that you can use to plot routes / waypoints (on the desktop and upload to the Garmin unit).

I'm going to pop in to their shop tomorrow with my Garmin unit and get them to show me - as there seems to be a bit of a difference of opinion here.

I'll let you know how I get on......................

Blimey - that was hard work.

OK - went to Blacks this morning and spoke to the 'experts' there about map data compatibility and the Garmin GPS.

They basically didn't know, but would phone garmin for me to check.

They couldn't get through, but were confident that it would work: i.e. get my GPS to display memory-maps.

They did say that I could bring the CD back if it didn't do what we all hoped it would - but if I break the seal on the CD box, I couldn't bring it back

So basically they would sell it to me, and would accept it back if I wasn't happy, but if I took the CD out of the case, I couldn't........

Anyway, I bought the maps and have discovered the following:

You CANNOT display the Memory-maps on the Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx device.!!! The routing software on the desktop is superb, and it is very easy to upload routes to the GPS, but not the maps.

So I'm sort of back to square 1 - Does anyone know if there are any compatibe UK maps for this device.

I've tried to research the MapSource maps, but I think they are only available for the US.

PLEASE HELP...........

Nick,
the resolution of the display on you rdevice is 160 x 240
Your not going to get the kind of detail required to satisfactorily display the detail of an O/S landranger or 1:25,000 map at this resolution, and it would be very limited as to the area of ground it will display too.

I use a bluetooth gps unit and a Tapwave zodiac running palmOS 5.2 which has a resolution of 480 x 320 to display o/s maps

You could get a cable which will connect your gps to a cheap secondhand pocketpc (Say a compaq ipaq 3630 running a 320 x 240 display) which would display the o/s maps using memory maps free pocketpc software. Your garmin would supply the nmea datastream it to enable a moving map display with you position pinpointed.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Just tried this and got a really good result.

Just got back from a tip up and then back down the 'Sugar Loaf' mountain near Abergavenny - top trek.

Thanks for all you replies guys............

Looks like this is more what you're after? Hard to tell from the demo but it doesn't look anywhere near as good as OS maps/Memory Map, and they're quite pricey for what they are really.
