I see that according to just about every news bulletin and newspaper this week, that due to climate change, the Earth is due to explode sometime next month.
So, instead of driving our 'planet destroyer' to London from the leafy Cotswolds today, Mrs Sinfield hopped on the train.
The cost of a second class day return up to the smoke ? £93. When she told me, I thought maybe she had been given a private train, but no, there are other people on it !
That'll keep her off the roads next time won't it..?

if you book well enough in advance (which i fully appreciate you might not be able to do on some journeys) train tickets are very cheap. eg, going tothe london motorsport show this year, if i go by train i can get tickets from bristol for £30! i do agree though that it is a scandal how the can justify charging the prices they do when you just turn up on the platform for an unexpected journey or when the situation dictates.
It gets better. There she is, stood on the platform having paid nearly £100 for a ticket. Of course, the train is twenty minutes late. The station announcer tells the second class oiks to go to the top of the platform. When the train arrives, they have this wrong so they all have to march down to the other end. Then, of course there is no seat.
I hear on the news that Greenpeace have some fools sat on top of one of the cooling towers at Didcot. She'll be able to see this from the train as she goes by - I do hope one of them does not fall in....

Public transport, another British success story. I calculated that it only costs me £24 pounds per week more to run an Impreza than it would to take public transport. In my calculations I've included every single expense including personal milege and a 500 quid slush fund for unforseen expenses, if I included personal travel on public transport then the impreza would be a lot cheaper! Therefore the government policy to promote public transport use means that I can drive a 20mpg sub-6 second 0-60mph car for more or less the same price as getting on a stinking unreliable bus or train! Anyone would think these government policies were merely a knee jerk reaction... :roleyes:
Ok - no such thing as british rail - so if you are going to moan about trains, get some things right.
I use south west trains every day to get from Halsemere to Waterloo - trains are modern smooth reliable and hardly ever late - I always get a seat and I think they are a splendid way for a chap to get about.
Not always the case three years ago I was on 1950's rolling stck, filthy and rattled your filings.
Things have changed ... However I agree the prices are astronomical £300 for a month, but if I don't buy monthly one off is £27 return per day !

We have 100's of those during the war types. Very annoying and I would say one of the reasons why the rail system is not as good as it can be, you would be amazed on how many people are stuck in the past on this job.

Count yourself VERY lucky then.
We get old, unreliable, s***e service, breaks down at least once a week, trains cancelled at least once a week, usually late for work at least once a week, sometimes don't get home for 3 hours due to "engineering" or whatever. Quite often we are getting the 7.07 at 7.43 or so..
The "service" we get is appalling at best. And for a terrible price too. Value for Money? My a**e.

I agree. I go from Fleet to Canary Wharf via Waterloo every day at the moment. Costs me £93 for the week (including parking at Fleet station, the train fare and tube). That's £18.60 per day. There's no way I could get to Canary Wharf and back for £18.60 by car including parking. The trains are clean, generally on time and comfortable. And I always get a seat (although by the time we get to Woking it's standing room only)
Edit: Having said that, the Jubilee line was "experiencing severe delays" (which was an understatement) today and I had to get a taxi from Waterloo to Canary Wharf in the end which cost £18, but even so I still maintain that the train is better than the car for my current commute.

I live in Essex and work in Westminster. I have to get the train EVERY.... SINGLE.... DAY. I hurts.
This morning being a prime example, 2 trains cancelled and the one that turned up at my train station was packed to breaking point. We still had 7 stops to make before my destination.
MP's that constantly go on about the public using public transport as opposed to cars have probably never used a train in their lives!
The cost for service is shocking.

The best thing that happend to me when I was unlucky enough to have to use the train everyday was during the strikes a few years ago. Checked the internet to see if my train was cancelled, it was, but it said that the intercity train would be running normally from my station.OK I thought I'll turn up and get that one instead.
So next day I get to the station, its deserted so I guessed that most people just weren't bothering. and wait and wait no trains.
Give network south east a call, "where is my train?"
"there arn't any running from your station today"
"but on the website it says that the intercities are running normally from here"
"Intercities dont normally run from that station, so yes they are running normally"
You just cant argue with logic like that, a couple of weeks later they where stripped of there franchise.
So next day I get to the station, its deserted so I guessed that most people just weren't bothering. and wait and wait no trains.

I fcuking hate people who say 'OK' at the start of a message, as if they are calling everybody to attention to listen to the deciding decision or important statement of the thread!
