this comes up every year ,but, what the hell?
i'm fed up with being fed up at this time of year....

Years and years of cumulative apathy eroding a once cherished part of the year?.... i've been guilty of moaning about it ,even here, on the hallowed tarmac of PistonHeads.

You know what?.....i used to 'so' love Christmas ,even into my mid twenties.....what goes wrong as you get older?......PC eejits who want to ban the very thought of a religious festival that may offend others that have nested in our shores?......over commercialism and a maddening consumer fed market ? the fact that it starts in october now? that the shops are open on Christmas day ?....that airports don't lock the gates just for 24 hours anymore (close to my heart this one! :-) xmas) .....that people can write it off as just another day ?.........

Whether you are religious zealot or a very private admirer of the good lord .......if Christmas is means anything to you ....don't let 'them' spoil it for you .....let it be like the good old days.......not talking about the 3 day week or power cuts but that magical time that you see light up your childrens or 'your' child-like eyes !!!

Those older like me ....remember what it felt like ....and live it again.....celebrate 'OUR' happy time .......like the those that celebrate Diwali in a joyous and happy way

let all our Christmasses be filled with Eric and Ernie , The Queens speech, smiling at people you don't know, being polite when not necessary , dreams of a snowy day, wistful thoughts of a Dickens-esque landscape, let Slade's Merry Christmas Everbody fill you warmth and not trepidation, glowing candles reflected in baubles and attending your kids nativity play with a genuine warmth for the coming special day

try to ditch the narcism and let's enjoy it without rolling our eyes rolleyes and tutting or let the PC brigade water it down any further.....

(maybe a silly little chunter i know......just wanted to try and banish all the bad news blues of late ......too many children in the news for the worst possible reasons lately along with many many adults in far away lands.....want to look forward to it this year without the humbug factor)

what makes it special for you?......like,as in 'old days special' ? remind me what i've forgotten about !

peace and goodwill to all men & women hippy xmas

At 31 I still love christmas, and I put it down to huge levels of immaturity on my part - seeing twinkly lights at this time of year fills me with joy!
Forget the cynicism and all the advice to grow up - regress and find the kid that still exists inside all of us blokes!

Christmas sucks, it's only good when your kid and you still believe that life isn't just one long miserable and pointless existence!

Bah Humbug indeed!

I can't stand christmas as from the commercial point it starts mid september and i'm bored of it by october. Boxing day it's staight in to sales. Just feels like loads of pressure to buy stuff that'll be 50% cheaper in January.

I find the whole christmas thing these days a bit laughablr.....

If you are not religious, or not a christian.....WHAT THE F**KING HELL ARE YOU CELEBRATING? or isit just an excuse to spend a week on the piss? (what are the first 6 letters of the word CHRISTmas?|)

If you do have any sort of Christian faith, no need to go further

That is a rather defeatist view! I hope you develop a brighter outlook on life.

Well I'm afriad I am not religious particularly, in fact at all if I am honest, but I still celebrate CHRISTmas - and I refuse pointblank to call it the holiday season or somesuch.

Apologies if that offends you, but tough.
To say that you have to be christian to celebrate Christmas, or easter of that matter, is a bit too 'fundamentalist' for me I'm afraid.
But then I went to a chinese new year celebration too, and I'm not even chinese. Crazy I know!

I agree generally that it has all become far too commercialised and lasts far too long in the shoips, but hey, just ignore it.

pssssst!....don't tell anyone but i am not THAT religious either .....but i do believe there is a 'big man' up there who wants to share in an alimighty fest of goodwill and enjoyment for at least one day in the year.....for fecks sake the rest of the year can be REAL shitty

for the sake of the big man and his little fella Jesus who died for OUR sins,

have a good one and remember the time when you were young and the magic it brought you.
Wide eyed and full of the most gut bursting excitement

all i'm saying is.....regress a little ....bring the magic back and spread it around a
little

life is too short and is getting shorter all the time (now THAT is a fact you can't argue with?)

This is England/Great Britain.....traditionally a Christian worshiping faith stronghold .....or are we just TOO cosmopolitan and PC nowadays?

I will truely admit I am not looking forward to this christmas, its another "first" without Dad. I managed, just, to get through my birthday with help from Mr.Smirnoff and friends.

But today I was walking through the Christmas Markets here in Manchester and it was really pretty and christmassy and old fashioned, I remembered I bought some stuff from there last year for Dad as he loved German food, so it also brought back memories.

Going to try again tomorrow as I just couldnt face it this afternoon.

Also going to get a tree and decorate the balcony, not sure how I am going to work the lights as there are no outside sockets and its too cold to have the patio doors open.

If the memory of your dad brings back all that is good in your thoughts......then dedicate this time of year to him......i didn't know him but i presume that his memories of you at this time of year would have been happy ones? Remember the good times and try to banish the worst experiences that age and life can throw at you......

p.s. you may have to try the battery powered lights option for the balcony tree?

Its mixed emotions, he loved gadgets but was absolutly usesless at operating them.

Battery - good idea, see if I can get one from my Ian at the garage.

Very well said indeed, I feel very similar to you on this one Father Ted.

I have an intense dislike for Christmas starting much before about now, the huge over commercialisation of it, and for people calling it Xmas.

I love spending time with family and friends who you don't often see, reading Christmas letters from those you don't have a chance to visit, carol services, midnight mass, brandy on the Christmas pudding, and giving presents.

Christmas should feel special, and I'm looking forward to it already for all the above reasons, and so I can have a break from the final year of my degree.

I hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas
