St. Malo after Le Mans - Places to stay.

Just wondering if any of you are returning on the morning ferry from St. Malo on Monday after Le Mans event.
If so I will give you a wave as we begin our two holiday to La Rochelle and back in the Tiv.
Having not travelled in France for sometime and a first for my S, any tips on travelling south would be most welcome, the do's or don'ts of French travelling. Where to stay etc??. (Booked a few places to stay in La Rochelle and Poitiers). I would be most grateful if any body can recommend anywhere to stay, something different, small private hotels rather than your Novatels! Passing through Rennes, Nantes and Niort. Oh yes and any good eateries if you could recommend would be much obliged as well.
