South of France anyone....

Feeling adventurous so may just jump in the car with tent in boot and head down for some sun for a week!
Anyone done this before without planning, are there plenty of campsites etc peak season which will take us?
Anyone done this with a little more planning and can provide some good hotels/B&B's/caravan/camp sites?
No plans so anywhere sunny with a beach etc, really don't care but on a budget so no 5 star hotels please

Oh yes,
last summer after Le Mans Classic, I droped the Mrs at Nantes Airport and headed south. I met up with a mate with a Griff and we made for Millau (the big bridge). Found a campsite in the village (there are lots) and did the Tarn Gorge for a day, it's about 80 odd miles of twisty TVR heaven. Then hired a canoe and did it again...great fun.
Head to Beziers on the south coast and there a lots of small villages on the Med with an abundance of campsites. Don't miss out on a blast through the Massive Central on the way home too, in part four lanes of fast straight autoroute without a camera or even a Gendarme between Limogues and Orleans.
Oh and don't fret about hoardes of yokels gathering around the Tiv, the Frenchies adore them and will more than go out of their way to help.

O yea, summer 2002, I decided I wanted too go back to the South of France. Rang insurance company, RAC and finally the ferry company. Three days later we were heading down to Dover.
We spent the first few days around Normandy, staying in "Fast Hotels", similar to Formula one. N7 (I think) to Lyon, and then on to Antibes, five minutes from Nice airport.
Spent a few day at camp du pylone, beach is quarter of a mile from camp site, and Monte Carlo is approximately Three quarters of an hour away.
Made the mistake of heading back during the August holidays, and not being able to find anywhere to stay. (European version of our Bank Holiday)
Turned out to be quite a good holiday.

Drive down through the Alps to Port Grimaud, stay at Camping Holiday Marina - run by Brits and you get your own private bathroom on each pich! It's a great base for exploring, you can go to Monaco, the Gorges du Verdun etc and St Tropez is just across the bay. Highly reccomended
Go for it but don't travel at the weekend. The autoroute is a nightmare south of Lyons. There are 45 minute queues to get through the tolls booths. Port Grimaud and St Tropez are PACKED right now. I drove down 10 days ago and just came back. The roads to and from St Trop are at a standstill. St Maxime or St Raphael are alternatives on the other side of the Bay.
