When we get very high pressure my analogue TV signal goes wibbly wobbly, and the Freeview goes off!

What's that all about then? I've currently got a high gain digital aerial which I've repositioned about 127 times.

Any ideas from you experts out there?

Yep, it was so bad here last night I thought my aerial had fallen off.

Usual bloody old crap; we're turning into a third world country now.

The high pressure effects the radio reflectivity of the troposphere so some signals from far away end up where you are and your signal can get attenuated. You can even get funnel effects for RF where signals from daft distances come through. Radio hams call these conditions a lift and you can work stations far outside your normal range. If you notice the signals are changing try getting to a high place in the car and put the radio on scan - you will get tons of european stations. Google tropo scatter

"The digital switchover" hasn't happened yet in most of the uk, once the analogue tv signal is switched off and the digital one switched on reception should be improved, we have the same problems with the weather.

The south coast could have more of a problem though, the french are set to go digital before that area of the uk, there are concerns that it might mean getting french channels rather than uk ones

eta, disclaimer, am no expert on this

Thanks Tonyv. Yep, the "blank" channel I use in the car is currently blasting out Dutch!

In all today's weirdness I managed to get perfect pictures of both South & Thames Valley today. I am north of Nottingham.

Thing is, summat must be wrong as I never had the wobbly analogue in other places that I've lived.

I beg to reply - nonsense! I've lived here for 20 years and reception has never been worse than it is now. Digital signals are higher frequency, so for the same power they don't go so far, plus they're attentuated by water vapour. Result: the digital dream sold to us by politcians will simply lead to worse reception at higher cost.

The "digital switchover" is also a very cunning marketing ploy for TV manufacturers. I often wonder how they have convinced the government to run ad campaigns which basically tell people to buy a new telly. They never mention the fact that a £20 Freeview box will achieve the same thing. Scaremongering. My mother thinks that her very expensive Sony analogue CRT set will have to go in the skip when it patently won't.

With mine some of the multiplexes are better than others. I usually get great BBC1, but ITV4 is really bad, by comparison.

I look forward to the day thay can stop the analogue stuff, and just crank the power up on digital. I don't think that trying to run two systems together is doing anyone any favours. The analogue stuff goes out at 100kW, and the digital stuff at 1kW. No wonder there is a difference

the freeview at work has been utterly crap for the last few days, especially in the morning.

I just did a factory reset and re-scan, and it's all OK :?
