It was with great sadness that I heard, yesterday, of the tragic death of Dr Walter Rhoden. Dr Rhoden, a highly respected Cardiologist at Barnsley Hospital and his wife Dr Kathy Phipps, a local GP, died on Sunday whilst on holiday in Florida.

Dr Rhoden was a former Cerbera owner and a huge fan of TVRs in general. He showed great interest when I acquired my T350T a couple of years ago. As a former owner myself now I realise that although you may no longer have the car physically, the spirt never leaves you.

Dr Rhoden and Dr Phipps were also great motorcycle enthusiasts were tragically killed whilst riding a rented Harley Davidson whilst on holiday in Florida. Details are still sketchy at the moment but reports issued by the Florida Highway Patrol state:
"Dr Rhoden was southbound on State Road A1A, south of Silk Oaks Drive, when a northbound car attempted a left turn into a driveway and drove into his patch, state troopers said. Rhoden took evasive action and his 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle went down, sliding on its side. Both Rhoden and his wife were thrown from the motorcycle."

The local healthcare profession is shattered my their loss and all our thoughts go out to their relatives and particularly their 3 children with whom they were holidaying at the time of the accident.

With much sadness

There's not much more news from the local papers:

but some of the comments are heartwarming.

Very sad news.

Driven on that road,(Atlantic Boulevard) normally the speeds are very low. This is the junction (ignore the green arrow).

Tragic for all involved, and also quite suprising given the report does not indicate a collision and from looking at the map. Awful to leave their kids behind that way.

Walter and Kathy were good friends of mine. Both were in my year at medical school, so I knew Walter for 30 years. Absolutely lovely couple, Kathy was lively, bubbly and great fun, and Walter possessed great charm and a dry sense of humour. I will miss them terribly.

Some words of comfort to their family.

At the end only two things really matter to a man, regardless of who he is,and they are; the affection and understanding of his family.
Anything and everything else he creates is insubstantial;it is a ship given over to the mercy of the winds and tides of prejudice.
But the Family is an everlasting anchorage, a quiet harbour where a man's ship can be left to swing to the moorings of pride and loyalty.

A very sad time.
