I've always used Mountfield petrol stuff and despite the abuse they get, they just seem to plough on with little or no maintenance.

Golden rule - complex 'time-saving' bits like auto height adjustment and the like do not save you time as they will just go wrong or break completely... Keep it simple and mechanical!

On a related note a biker mate of mine gave his petrol Flymo a "bit of a tune up" and was running it on avgas. The thing was absolutely lethal yikes

I've just got a Honda Izy mower from Lings Honda and have to say it's so much better than the Flymos I've previously had.

My Dad swears by his Stihl strimmer.

Agreed, as someone who sells alot of this kit for a living, honda for the mower, stilh for pretty much everything else, garden master are also pretty good, they are a rental market brand and as such basic but very very hard wearing

I've recently bought a Stihl long-reach hedge trimmer and a Stihl leaf blower/vacuum shredder. Very happy with them both. Their stuff seems to be well made.

Another vote for Stihl. I'm govt employed and work in forestry/countryside management and we tend to use Stihl for all of our equipment. We have several Kubota Diesel ride on mowers which are a great tool.

yes

Two-stroke petrol = Stihl
Four-stroke petrol = Honda
Four-stroke diesel = Kubota

Can't go wrong.

Agree with most of what has been said already. One to throw into the mix as well though is John Deere. Probably the most comprehensive range of mowers from walk behind to Ride on, to Compact Tractor, Scarifiers etc etc. If you are talking about pro use bear in mind that JD parts back up is second to none and generally a lot cheaper than Japanese manfacturers.

I swear by Husqvarna kit, but make sure its made in Sweden and not under license in the US. And unless you absolutely must, I'd stick with an electric hedge trimmer. Petrol ones are just too heavy to be comfortable.

Absolutely. Husqvarna stuff is great. I've got 2 chainsaws and a strimmer. My BiL has a Husqvarna chainsaw that is still going strong after 14 years - and it gets used very regularly.

Buy Stihl if you insist on the best and have limitless pockets. But for the rest of us mere mortals who don't intend on becoming proffessional tree surgeons etc my petrol powered gardening equipment includes a Honda Izy lawnmower and a petrol chainsaw from B&Q that cost £60. I use the chainsaw about 10 times a year, it does the job, scares the st out of me, and costs 4 times less than a Stihl.

I have a B+Q special petrol lawnmower.
£150ish quid , self propelled , 4hp think its Quicksilver branded.
Part of garden is 1/4>1/2slope and it does it easily , best £150 quid I've spent.

Stihl have a prosumer range called Viking which is worth a look. Serves as a nice middle ground, but mostly mowers, although there is some crossover.

I needed an old lawnmower as my garden was a total mess and I could,'t put up a shed till it was sorted. Some kind mate from PH donated a very old, somewhat battered looking hayter that he had not used for years. One service later and the thing is fantastic, starts easily, cuts well, even sounds good! I dont know about their new stuff, but if it is as well made as the one I have, you should take a look at them. The thing is built like a tank and has the unexpected bonus of having a suprisingly tune-able engine...!
