Trip to New York
Discussion
I'll be there next week actually, but haven't planned much... Things to do are the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the National History museum (good for a day) and central park, take a walk on the brooklyn bridge for a good look at downtown manhattan...
I'm sure there are more fun things to do though, but it's been 8 years since i've been

Check out:
USS Intrepid, The Empire State Building at night, avoid the Italian restaurants on Mulberry. Get your visitor card before shopping if you intend visiting Macy's. Don't eat breakfast in your hotel, go to a local diner. Make sure you have an appetite for dinner, portions are huge. Do drink Californian Nappa and a Silver Oak with a fine steak fillet....great. Grand Central Station, very impressive. Shopping in Soho,... ecclectic.
I could go on and on. One of the world's great cities. Actually on par with dear olde London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and San Francisco.
Enjoy.

Ok Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I am planning to go to ground zero, Statue of Liberty, Empire State building and probably the natural history museum, but i think i might also do one of those bus tours someone suggested. I've been looking on some websites and they mentioned the skyscraper museum and police museum does anyone know if they are worth doing? also, someone told me something about fast track passes, are they worth doing and where would you get them? Thanks again for everyone's help.

Have been to NYC many times and there are so many things to do. As a first time visitor, suggest you concentrate on things to give you perspective over the vast array of neighbourhoods and atmospheres - such as the 3 hr (excellent) boat trip around the whole of Manhattan (which also shows several of the other boroughs); Empire State will give you a good view of the city (esp around sunset for photos); Grand Central a superb place for lunch/people watching, esp the Oyster Bay downstairs for the former; Central Park at the weekend to chill out; and simply walking, walking and walking some more. If Museums are your interest, Ellis Island is superb (if very busy at times), Met Museum of Art also excellent. Eating is also a real thrill there - some of the best local places anywhere in the US (especially for brunch) - and if you want to treat yourself, many world class restaurants. Fetchez la vache said:
Is the Statten (sp) Island ferry still a quarter return? Bound to have gone u a bit but at the time it was a great way to see manhatten island on the cheap at sunset
Nope. Free of charge. Went last November, and I've never been so cold in my life, but had to spend the whole round trip outside to get the obligatory S of L pics.
FYI - USS Intrepid isn't there at the moment, its in Hoboken being renovated.
If you want to do the Brooklyn Bridge, i would suggest subway over to Brooklyn and walk back over, there's a pizza place on the other side so do it around lunchtime and walk it off, saves time you see.
I would avoid going on Liberty Island as its boring as anything, if immigrations your thing, then Ellis Island for sure, but otherwise not so much.
Don't go near the WTC site unless you like construction, there's literally nothing there, merely foundations. I'd wait another time when things start to happen down there.
