In view of the huge number of complaints about bent coppers a mate of mine suggested that if they were paid less to start with it might attract less of the What can I get out of it Brigade. Any Comments?

I reckon it would make it worse, as there would be more bent ones trying to make up the extra.

If anything they should be paid more.

But they need to be refocussed and that is the job of the Govt and Chief Constables.

When we all have ID cards, the police will have so much less to do that

a) they can all have pay cuts
b) the government can start reducing police numbers again

If anyone should have a pay cut it should be the judiciary

Why? Just recruit lots of commie support officers and let the real cops all retire...

This would work brilliantly if there were an unlimited number of highly talented, yet altruistic people in the general population.

Ive been punched, spat at, kicked and bitten. 30K! tube drivers get more than that. For a 25yr old i still believe its very good money but ive been doing this since i was 20. Give me any other job which pays the same (or more) and id go tomorrow.

Its a shame really but people who dont do the job will never ever understand. Sudden deaths, fatal accidents, murders. Ive seen the lot but id be telling fibs if i said it didnt effect me.

When youve seen undertakers take someone out with a spade (because they had melted into the floor), or been first on scene to a male shot in the chest six times (giving mouth to mouth) then i will listen to your comments.

Regards.

PooPoo - can't you see the terrible affect the "War on Motorists" is having on the relationship between the ordinary citizen and the police. Where once they were seen as a respected and essential element of society they are gradually becoming "the enemy".

This government is taking a path which will lead ordinary, normally law abiding, folk to consider that the once reverered British "bobby" bears a closer relationship to the "Gestapo" or the "Stazi" rather than "Dixon of Dock Green" - especially when they will be able to utter those infamous words totally alien to British culture - "Can I see your papers".

It makes me shudder.

Second that. I grew up in a midle-class family and felt the police represented the Establishment of which I was part. As I didn't plan on any criminal acts, they were on 'my' side protecting me fom the bad guys.

Now I'm the bad guy and they're out to get *me* - simply for driving at the same speed I did, perfectly safely and lawfully, 10 years ago. Honest citizens are easier to nick, give correct addresses and pay their fines because they have jobs, bank accounts and reputations. This comment is generally aimed at the over-pumped traffic wardens known as 'Traffic'. For other police who actually fight crime, scrape people off the street, break up bar fights and risk their life to save others, no problem.

I think in general bobby's at the lower end of the force are genuine, straight, hardworking, honest people and I think they deserve what the earn (maybe more).

The whole reason you get bent cops is because they get paid crap money and the criminals can pay them more than they earn. They are desperate for the money and so fall for the trap. Once they are in it's very difficult to get out. I doubt any cops are corrupt just for the sheer thrill of it or went into the profession because of the "bonuses" they could make from bungs and bribes.

In developing countries like South America cops get paid the same as janitors and other low skilled workers which is why corruption is so endemic in those countries.

So reducing their pay would only make matters worse.

surely this is the nature of the beast though ..?
had you not wanted to see murders, violent crime and poor public attitude you shouldn't have joined the police ...

it's like the fire brigade saying they need more pay because they have to go in burning buildings .. completely beyond me.

to be a copper you need to be a certain breed .. attracting coppers based on pay is criminal. to say you're not paid enough because of what you see each day isn't a valid argument.

to say you need more pay because you're going to be extra vigilant in your work and strive to make our world a better place .. well that's more like it, I would applaud that, and based on succesful results .. even better.

Well said Joolz.

I really do not understand how people can moan about their jobs when it was their choice to sign on the dotted line. What people are saying is that you are not paid enough to be spat at and sworn at but if you received an extra £15k/yr it would be acceptable?

The Police are an emergency service, they all have to be adaptable just like HM Forces as it’s the nature of their job. If you want a really rubbish job become a Ryanair Aircraft Engineer. Sticking your hand down a toilet tank to clear a blockage………nice.

There are career PC's who earn more in the job than they ever could out of it. I know a few guys in the Met who are pulling in £40K - £50K by doing plenty of overtime. There is no way some of these could earn that sort of money in other jobs. Most of these guys are honest, hardworking upstanding members of the force, some (fortunately only a few) are scumbags who would be fighting the police if they weren't employed by them.

From what they all say it is a unique job with lots of nasty stuff & lots of good stuff. Benefits are pretty good - I wish I could have 2 months off to fix a leg injury sustained when out on the lash! (the guy involved wasw not even put in an office to help with paperwork).

Where do i say i think i should get more money? This thread is "should the police be paid less" And yes, sometimes i do love my job. Kicking in the door to an elderly person collapsed, and saving their life feels good. Sometimes you do something that makes you feel "yeah this is why i joined the job" But its rare.

But on the other hand, it is at the end of the day 'a job' which i do to sustain my lifestyle and passion for performance cars. Something i would not be able to do with LESS money.

Kind Regards.

Rough with the smooth - just like any other jobs.

I just wish I could be more respectful to the police. At the moment, however, they seem to be going out of their way to upset the "normal" population.

Sorry, not saying you should get paid less at all - I have a lot of respect for the institution & most who do the job! I apologise if my post reads that way.

Dropping the pay could rduce the number of people wanting to join up & there needs to be enough incentive to attract & retain the people who will be running the operation of the force in years to come.
