I would just like to state, for the record, that my initial reaction to this story was total disbelief, but am told it is totally true!
My colleague’s friends’ father has lung cancer, and he advertised his Mondeo for £2K, as he didn’t need it anymore, for obvious reasons.
One guy, an Iranian immigrant came to look at the Mondeo, he liked it, he said he’d buy it. The guy went away and said he’d be back later in the afternoon with the money to buy the car.
The afternoon came, he came back, with him he carried a £2000 cheque from the DSS to buy the Mondeo. The seller smelt something fishy with this, as he (quite understandably) could not believe the welfare state would give so such funds for a car. He rang the DSS to confirm, and he eventually got through to the right department, and spoke to a seemingly very embarrassed woman confirming that the cheque was fine and correct, the cheque, she explained was given to the individual, due to the fact that he complained that public transport was unreliable, and he kept on being late for job interviews, so the DSS very kindly gave him the funds to buy a car!
This, apparently, applies only to immigrants and asylum seekers, and is extended to help them set up their own businesses, for example, plumbers get funds for their vans/equipment, all paid for by the DSS – with help like this, if it is indeed true, is it any wonder we are seeing more immigrants doing these jobs?

As I said, I am not how true some of this is, if someone knows how this works, I would love to be corrected – as I see right now, giving immigrants the complete funding to set themselves up in business gives them an unfair advantage compared to someone who has to pay for their equipment and keep a profit margin surely?

I have heard that they will fund a vehicle purchase up to £3k, however I suppose a driving license and insurance are optional extras.

I heard of something very similar happening in my old home town, a popular East Anglian holiday town in Norfolk, which has a bit of an asylum problem.
Broadly similar circumstances, but the car was being purchased from a dealer for £5000. When presented with the cheque, the dealer phoned the appropriate department, who told him that all was above board.
Can't vouch for how true this is, it may well be an urban legend, but there's no smoke ......

yep its true.. mate is a car dealer in southend on sea, he has sold over 30 cars on this basis.

Before this the claiments were using taxi's, at out expense and it was deemed cheaper to provide a car.

You can't ever rely on public transport in this country, but I bet this joker never gave himself any additional time to get where he was supposed to be going anyway. Expecting the bus/train to turn up at the time stated and arrive at the time stated. You always have to take into account possible delays. I know someone who have been turned away from an interview because they were held up because of a car accident blocking the motorway they were on.

I hope this has been forwarded to the relevent rabid newspapers, they love this kind of story.

It's been going on for a few years now. A pal of mine (a car dealer in Peterborough) was once presented with a DSS cheque for a car and refused to sell the car to the immigrant on principle.

We're buying immigrants cars whilst treating cancer sufferers to a post code lottery?
Please tell me this is not so.

Quite simply beggars belief.

Is the DSS admitting on behsalf of the public transport agency that they are rubbish?

If I have no car and public transport is crap then I'd either buy a bike or walk. Am I too much of a push-over in this respect?

While I'm not accusing those posting earlier in the thread of being economical with the truth, this REALLY beggars belief.

Especially considering the sacrifices I've had to make recently to put a sub £1k Corsa on the road....

Is there any form of hard confirmation on this?

I'm beyond aghast...

If you've been on the rock and roll for 18 months whoever you are they'll give you all the help you need to set up business on your own.

You can get this help after 6 months on the dole if you are not a British National or have done time.

The entire benefit system is shambolic.

Completely true. I know a dealer principal who has confirmed this - government cheques up to £5k apparently have been used to buy cars!

Now for the amazing part...

Dealers will refuse to allow purchasers to drive away in a car without tax and insurance, which poses a problem for some 'purchasers'. To counter this there are enterprising individuals who collect the cars on transporters for the lucky winners (that's what they are, surely) then deliver them up the road for a small fee to be driven away in without insurance or tax. I would assume a car is only gifted to people with licences but I'm not so sure our wonderful government are that organised. Again, all from a reputable source.

Oh it gets worse....

You know those "mobility" schemes for the apparently disabled?

My B-In-Law has two staff in his offive on 25k+ who are in this scheme. Neither of them have any signifcant mobility issues. amd absolutely no special provision has to be made for them at work.

What do they get?

Every three years a brand new car, that is taxed, fully serviced and maintained including tyres and brakes for free. All they have to do is put petrol in the car.

It is the best company car scheme there is, and it's fully state funded.

Really does make me wonder why I bother.

I am shocked! I was genuinelly kinda hoping that I was gonna be put right on this, and be told it's all lies!
My best friend was made redundant late last year, spent most of his redundancy on a van and graphics for a courier business, didn't get a lot of business due to 'others' doing it, he asked me, 'how do they manage and I cant get more than 2 pick ups a weeks, well, now we know!
You cannot compete fairly with immigrants who get all their equipment for free, paid by us (that is, until we ourselves are out of work!)
This is crazy!
