Just fitted a 3/4 size plate from fancyplates.com, looks great but just been searching old threads about being stopped by plod.

A few people keep the full size one in the boot.....? How does that get you out of trouble ? I can understand having no plate and a broken full size one in the boot.....just broken it officer. But how does the conversation go with a small plate fitted and full size one in the wings ?

i saw a traffic cops tv prog a few years ago and 3 bikers had 3/4 size plates on, the plod stopped them for speeding and mentioned the plates but they didnt get a ticket just a warning for them.

if its the front plate i doubt youd get stopped at all as to see it theyve really got to be in the on coming traffic. rears should be left full size.

personally i like the stick on plate on the bodywork but ive been told these arent street legal either.

reminds me of the e type jag!

Just tell em you keep catching the full size ones on all the illegaly high speed bumps the local councils blight our roads with. you can't raise the plate as it blocks the airflow.
I've not been pulled and i've had 3/4 plate for ages, lots run around with no plate and a broken one in the boot, then tell the same story.

4.5yrs an d 75K miles and never been bothered with a 3/4 style plate - it looks right on a an Elise and usual arguments would apply if stopped ....had at least 3 coppers in close proximity....all of which were too interested in the car to be bothered !

Smaller plate looks far better and does not catch on furniture.

I generally apologise profusely and point out that I have a replacement plate in the boot (show them the plate). I tell the copper that I did not know at the time it was ilegal, when I realised, I purchased a "legal" plate. Then make up and excuse why you havnt got down to halfrauds for some mounting tape.

Be polite and apologetic. Only the absolute tossers will go on and give you a fine after that and they were looking for a reason and would do thier best to find it.

While most coppers want to see the car and will ask about it. A few are jealous and just want to hand you a ticket.

When they have given you a fine / hard time then enjoy yourself, get your £30 worth. I find "I would like to question the validity of your conception" a good opener.

I dont even have a front plate. You're better off without one and any plate other than standard is just as illegal as none at all. I've never been stopped in 6 months without it. I'm hoping the BiB actually do have something better to do....

The only problem I've ever had is that a garage once refused to start the petrol pump since their number plate recognition software couldn't work! I handed over my c/c and they were happy enough.

What is the new reg? I must admit that probably the only reason I have a plate on the front is 'cos I am vain and love my private plate.

I drove around for a while with no front plate and didnt get stopped. I had to put a plate on for MOT in january so used strong velcro and have mounted a full plate lower down it now acts as a scrape alert which I find useful for speed humps etc.
When it eventually gets knocked off I prob wont replace until next MOT!

Also drove my old cars with mis spaced plate for 5yrs with no probs including getting stopped for speeding etc no comment was ever made by BIB.

Grey Area really until forward facing cameras become the norm and it may stop them collecting more cash oops I mean making us drive safer!

3/4 plate on the front secured with Heavy Duty velcro, standard size in the boot (also with velcro attached) for the MOT. Only been stopped by police once since owning the Exige (not for the 3/4 plate), they mentioned that the plate wouldn't pass the MOT, but that was it.

Sort of looks right on the Elise, right size for the car. It's fitted so we'll see what happens.

So long as the plate is in the right font and correctly spaced, and isn't pisstake small, you're very unlikely to get pinched. If you do, play the dumb American and say it's been like that since you bought it.
