111s technical questions...

I'm looking at a 111s at the moment but it's had a few things done to it that I'm a bit unsure about and was wondering if any of you kind people could enlighten me...
The rubber bush that holds the gear has been removed (it was preventing the reverse gear selection as it had worn). What's the impact of doing this, apart from increased whine from the gear box and is there any reason why it wasn't just straight replaced?
The car has the standard exhaust and from what I've read here it's pretty pants, most people seem to have replaced it with a sports exhaust, roughly how much does that cost.
Finally, I realise that the standard car is easier to upgrade than the 111s but what else can be done to increase the output of the engine (short of turbo charging it)?
I appreciate your help, hopefully I'll be a proud owner of an elise soon...very soon...Damit, it can't be soon enough!!!
