Garmin 2008 maps?
Discussion
I've answered my own question...

Or a tenner less on eBay.
One question though, this is an SD card - is there some way you can copy the map to the Nuvi? The unit originally comes with the Europe maps embedded anyway so why lose your SD card slot?

Go to www.garmin.com, select 'Maps' then 'Map Updates'. Enter your unit's serial number and it will tell you the most recent version of compatible maps for your unit.
The cheapest price I can find for the Map Update 2008 City Navigator® Europe NT is £46.66 from Amazon....
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-European-City-Navig...
And you can only use it one one product.
It's already come down in price by £13, so I guess it isn't exactly selling like hot cakes!

Just upgraded my nüvi660 with the 2008 mapping - and yes, it took about 2 hrs from feeding the DVD to the D:drive!
Some local new roads still missing, I note.
Incidentally, how does one turn off the infernal auto zoom? I think you have to zoom right in when in nvaigation mode, but it always seems to reset itself after a software update. SW version 4.30 was released on 22 Feb - the only change of significance in the UK being a resolved issue with Cyclops speed camera cache.

I think the disc is 'generic' until you type in the product key during install - then it contacts Garmin and the disc and GPS are matched?
It also required a fair bit of computer disk space to load!
However, the install was painless, if rather lengthy. For those interested, it doesn't cause any previous favourite destinations to be erased.
Having got utterly fed up with the windscreen sucker mount, I've just installed a Garmin 'Automotive dashboard mount' in my SLK32. Despite what it says in the instruction leaflet, it is easier to stick the 'permanent' adhesive pad to the dashboard top first and let it bond for 24 hours. Then carefully peel off the protective film and stick the mount to the dashboard. Then let it bond for another 24 hours before attaching the cradle suspension arm and cradle:
Now, if only there was a better power and TMC system instead of the fag plug thing and bit of black string....
Surely it cannot be difficult to make such a thing? I'm sure there would be quite a lot of demand for it.

Yep, did this from new - won't have anything stuck to thw windscreen. Also note that on some dash areas you can find a shiny plastic or laquered wood area and the mount-sucker sticks solidly to it without the circular mounting plate.Another alternative is to mount on the large radio display. The only thing I find awkward with this is that the traffic mute is tucked behind the sat nav mount.
For the estate I've just acquired with a regular DIN socket radio I'm looking at folding a strip of metal to lock into the ashtray. Then screw the original mount (that was replaced as it had a duff sucker) on the end.
