My Father-in-law has a new XC90 with built in Sat Nav. Having had a play around with it I can't find where you can store waypoints (specifically: home). Anyone know what the trick is or is it not possible?

Also the lack of full-postcode search is rather crap.

Go to a dealer and get the upgrade - post code search is available with the update IIRC. It wont be cheap though.

Oh, thats a shame. From what I understand the Volvo satnav is pretty good. Seems strange...

it can be done i'm sure- just play around with the menu's and it's in there - from memory, do you enter as a destination and then select save?

Volvo Nav is very nice to use - but really does pick some stupid routes!

2008 dvd should offer half postcodes ie - HD1 9xx and then list various streets.

I have the Volvo systemin my AMV8, main complaint is that it doesn't have 'safety camera' data. Anyone know if the system can be upgraded to add this. AM garage say not an option, but I get the impression they are just bing sniffy..

We have the built in Volvo units in our operational vehicles.

To answer the questions.

Speed camera and other databases, an upgrade is not an option.

Saving destinations. There are a number of ways to do this, you can select an address and save it as a stored location. Alternatively you can scroll around the map and then having found the exact point you can save that.

Postcodes, yes undertsand the point about the system only having half postcodes eg AB12 3??

You can come seriously unstuck using postcodes as some companies have postcodes which are different from the actual street address, and at times even find yourself pitching up outside the local sorting office.

Updates available by DVD which also updates the software, only available from Volvo and doesn't appear rippable by PC software.

Odd routings Again you can get this and it is worst if there is a known quicker route on lesser class narrower roads and the system wants to route you along more major but congested roads. Way round this, at least the way we deal with it, is by having pre set areas to avoid. These can be cancelled or invoked fairly quickly. You just draw an area on the digital map, set to avoid and away you go. You can also avoid particular roads, or types of roads.
However there are odd time the routing algorithm seems a bit stupid.

General Obs the control buttons and mini joystick on the steering wheel makes this one of the easiest units to use on the move imo.

Split screen excellent really excellent allows you to have a map zoomed right in and one zoomed out a bit further to get a really good heads up.

TMC Delay routing picks up traffic information on classic FM and informs of delays closures and offers to reroute. Bit like the curate's egg sometimes it is OK and other times it is a royal PITFA. eg you get a warning message of delay at point A, do you want to reroute? You select yes and it works out a new route, displays a screen which gives distance and time for old and new routes so you can decide. Say you pick new route, it he goes away and finds a problem on that route at point , and offers you a new route. 9 times out of 10 it recalculates the original route which has the problem at point A and you just bounce between the two.

The system does have a divert system which allows you to soy, avoid the next [pick a distance from drop down list] miles but in my experience you end up going via Edinburgh if diverting off the M4 for a bit. Exaggeration I know but you know what I mean.

Map accuracy because it's only updateable by buying new DVDs from Volvo it is expensive to keep up to date vs ones which download data. I think the Volvo turn by turn system does download data but the top of the range version as we have and is in the XC90 and Astons is as described above.
