Hopefully a simple one to answer. I'm looking to buy my first Sat Nav for the car after many years of being perfectly happy with maps. I've searched this forum and also google but can't find a simple one to one comparison of the two choices below i.e. Which is better to buy?

My requirements:
- Easy to use
- UK Maps, and also N.Europe Maps (for holidays)
- Reliable mapping with readily available updates
- Wide screen
- Traffic updates (FREE via TMC cable - don't want to pay a subscription)
- I'll need a carry case, car charger and USB cable (if needed) for updates

I have narrowed it down to two choices:

1) Garmin Nuvi 255WT - European Mapping, Widescreen, Built-in Traffic £129.99 from Amazon. - Would need to buy carry case but charger included. No USB cable mentioned.

2) TomTom ONE XL + Case + Traffic + European Maps £129.99 from Amazon. - Charger, USB cable and case included.

Which one should I buy?
Any advice or views on the two systems would be most appreciated.
Many thanks.

I really like the TomTom, easy to use, easy to plot routes, mapshare, lots of addons (if you're that way inclined).

I've looked at a Garmin several times, I reckon a while ago they might have been "better", if not as usable. But now I think the technology is on a par (for road use) and I still prefer the usability of the TT.

Had a Nuvi 250 which was absolute rubbish. Very slow and always 100 metres behind the real position. Believe the new ones might be a bit better but personally would not take the risk again.

Bought the TT Europe XL.....a super bit of kit. No complaints and recommended. I use it most weeks all over Europe.

I have the Nuvi 250w - no problems, nice size screen, great improvement over earlier Garmins (I've had 3).

You should benefit if going Garmin with 2009 Maps and the Traffic capability on the 255WT. It will also "speak" road names, another improvement I missed !!
(Can't remember if it came with a USB cable?? I have one that came with the Garmin Quest and it works and charges the Nuvi when plugged into a computer, likewise when you use it in the car, the unit is charged/kept charged by the cigar plug).

I was wondering what that was all about in the "Customers who bought this also bought a USB cable.." WTF?? Although I should point out I've got USB cables for almost every event, so think I've got that one covered.

Will report back, once it arrives.

I think the price has risen for the Garmin, although the TomTom has gone down in price..

No USB cable, but it's a "standard" mini one, which are all around, even on fleabay at not too extortionate prices..

I also ordered the leather case for it, Garmin.

RSGulp,

I bought the 255w (the one without the traffic) and it has been ace. Very quick at finding satellites and quick at rerouting when you take a different route to the one it suggests.

I've used it throughout the UK and in France and other than directing me into a field in France (which to be fair i knew was happening and did it for the kids - honest) i have had no problems with it whatsoever and would recommend it.

Interaction with the Garmin website has been good although i haven't yet found any updates for it. I didn't buy a USB cable for it as i have stacks of different ones in the house. I think the one from my phone did the trick.
