My local IAM group pairs you up with a different Observer each week. It is great because each of them is very different and some are particular about one thing, so after about seven drives you really have had a wide range of views on driving and have focused on a variety of techniques and practices.

Do local IAM groups still offer free "taster" sessions?
My local group used to, they would set up for a morning at a local car park where you could turn up and go out with an observer for a short drive. He or she would offer advice and ask a few questions, then it was up to you if you wanted to take it any further.
I can't say I've seen it advertised for a long while though.

Ged,

It has been mentioned on other posts that the waiting lists are a bit long in some areas - we are about 10/12 weeks at present in my area and I have heard of 6 to 12 months in other areas.

If you have trawled through some other posts you will see some criticism of the IAM - much of it justified.

We have wait lists because of demand/supply problems so must be doing something right...I suggest that you call your nearest Group and ask if you can have an Assesment drive - we tend not to advertise this as we are too busy working with the Associates who have joined us...but it is available to serious enquirers...we get enough time wasters who want to be told that they are good drivers...and enough plonkers who do not join us when we tell them they are not as good as they think.

Bof,

I appreciate that in some area's there are long waiting lists.
I just thought that it might be a way of possibly attracting the people who most need it.
I went for a free assessment a long time ago, joined as an associate at the next meeting, went for an observed drive the night after and passed the test the night after that.
Sadly I never renewed my membership after the first year, I went to a few meetings but they weren't for me. I don't think I would make it as an observer, I'm a terribly nervous passenger and not very good at getting my point over.
