Hello to all, yes this my first time on this forum.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, by the way it has given very good info about powershift v geartronic boxes. (Found via a search engine)

But I was in a Volvo dealer today enquiring about a V50 2.0D R design powershift & was told they are bringing out a 150bhp & 177bhp 2.0 diesel engines in the next few weeks.

The sales rep I spoke to believes they will still have the powershift box, but I’m not so sure? As I’ve discovered on the Volvo web site, the new S60 will have a new 2.0 diesel D3 engine which will be fitted with a Geartronic box. The D3 is a smaller capacity 2.4/2.5 version of the new D5 unit.

I’m guessing it will be the D3 going in the C30/S40&V50, but as it will have a geartronic box in the S60, do you think it’s a given it will go in the V50 also?

I actually fancied the 2.0D with powershift; I’m trying to find if this D3 engine with Geartronic box will be a better option before they close the orders on 2.0D with powershift.

Does anyone have inside information?

Dunno, I wandered down our local Swedish dealer and they were as much use a chocolate teapot, although they could still sell me a D5 V50 which has been discontinued acc UK.

If they are fitting Geartronic in S60 I can bet they will fit same in S40/V50. Pure speculation.

The current 2.0D is the "Ford" sourced TDCi but properly sorted by Volvo as opposed to the abortion Ford came up with. Volvo have been trying to ditch it for ages but were forbidden by Ford aiui.

The powershift transmission is also used by Ford, so my guess, and it is a complete and utter guess, is that Volvo, after the sale by Ford, will drop the PowerShift in favour of the GT.

I went to another Volvo dealer today & guess what? They knew nothing about it.

I've just found the details of the D3 on the Volvo-Sweden web site - http://www.volvocars.com/se/all-cars/volvo-s60/det...

Anyway the V50 2.0D as most will probably know has 136bhp(PS) & the torque is 320Nm.

0-62mph/100kph for the Manual is 9.6 seconds & Co2 is 153g/km
0-62mph/100kph for the Powershift is 9.7 seconds & Co2 is 159g/km

The new S60 D3 2.0D will have 163bhp(PS) & the torque will be 400Nm.

0-62mph/100kph for the Manual will be 9.2 seconds & Co2 will be 134g/km
0-62mph/100kph for the Geartronic will be 9.2 seconds & Co2 will be 154g/km

So if Volvo do release the V50 with the new D3 engine with Geartronic box, it doesn't look like it will be the end of the world.

Oh by the way, welcome to PH, forgetting my manners.

I'd agree it isn't the end of the world with a Geartronic but it will be sad to lose proper control of compression braking that you get with the Powershift in favour of what you get, or rather don't really get with a torque converter box.

It always amazes me how the hell it knows that I'm going down the hill into our village on a closed throttle and that it shouldn't change up but continue to hold 3rd, all whilst in D.

The new D3 has been well received in marine applications. The previous D3 had some reliability issues but so far this one appears OK.

Thanks for the welcome.

I think I’m going to go with the current 2.0 diesel with the powershift.

The performance figures are not that different & I think the only way it will be beneficial to wait, is if Volvo installed the D3 with the powershift.

It would have a lower Co2 than the current 2.0D / powershift set up, as the S60 D3 with manual is a lot lower than V50 2.0D manual.

It would be great as this is actually going to be a company car. It would mean less cash to the tax man & more in my pocket.

But I can't wait any longer I need to get the order in! It'll 8-12 weeks before I get it anyway. AAAHHHH!!!

I'd have to agree with FIF in that as both the current 2.0d and powershift gearbox are "Fords" Volvo won't have them when they become Chinese (so to speak). I'd guess they might be able to buy/use them for a while after the sale though?
If the gearbox going on the new D3 engine is anything like the autobox in my V70 then I'd say it'll be good, but nowhere as effiecient as a poweshift.

As a side note, have Volvo designed a completely new 2.0 diesel engine that is nothing to do with Ford? And if its kicking out the power it says it is, will it replace the old D5 163?

How is the economy going now FIF? I saw you and another guy were struggling to break 40mpg on runs...or was it just him? I find the diesels take a while to bed in and mine is pretty good on runs...crap round town though!

Pretty good now, overall over the winter it's been 47-49 on a mixture, long runs and commute.
No problem to break 50 on a run, not by much, 51-52ish but could get more if pedalled a bit easier I must admit. Though perhaps thinking again there must be some positive influence of all those sodding miles at 50 in Specs monitored roadworks. frown

I haven't done any mega trips in decent weather for a while in this one. Most of my miles have been on job cars so mine is just coming up to 25k after 17 months.

Tyres still wearing well too, which might explain the crap grip. frown

Still enjoying surprising the traffic light grand prix barry boys on our local bypass. Quite amusing to see faces when they get outdragged by some grey haired old geezer loaded up on a trip to the tip. hehe

Much better than me then. My C30 2.0D's indicated average mpg is still in the 37-38 range after 25,000 miles. Really long runs can improve that to about 40 mpg but it's never been more than that.
