S60 D5... owners
Discussion
What other 'quirks' does the euro 4 have then over the 3 apart from the DPF? I've read about 'swirl pots' (if that's right - no idea what they are)? I presume everything else is the same in terms of what to watch out for, belts, suspension bushes, DMF, clutch slave cylinders, intercoolers etc.
Servicing myself is an option, scary though after having seen the nightmare you had with the fuel filter
Are DPF's expensive for the D5? I had one on an Astra CDTi, I seem to remember a new one from Vx only being 90 quid (I may be wrong) and of course this is a different car but are they pricey on the Volvo?

What is the issue with the rear brakes? I've owned mine for over 2 years now and have only heard it mentioned recently
the OEM rear shoes corrode, lifting the friction material that then comes away and wrecks the hub.Not much fun.
I put mintex ones on mine as a precaution.
btw My OH is now the owner of my beloved S60 D5...I have a new toy.

So best to change the rear shoes as prevention? Not much fun.

For what it's worth, I used to drive a Golf with a PD TDI engine and it did about 50mpg - on the same route the D5 will maybe do 2mpg less, whilst being faster and a *lot* nicer to drive.
Mine used to pretend to be parsimonious, if you believed the lying bd computer, as I've banged on about many times before on this thread and others. It claimed to be averaging 55-59 mpg. Reality was 14 mpg less. Mind you, my new Superb, 12 plate, is overreading by 4 mpg, so I tend to use the computer as a tool to estimate relative rather than actual fuel economy. I think the most accurate one I had was a Polo 1.9 tdi, which was about 1.5 mpg exaggerated.
The big stripdown has begun. The injectors came out surprisingly easily, which makes me a little suspicious as I've heard they can be difficult.
Rocker cover is off, on first inspection the head doesn't seem to be damaged, I am expecting that the rocker supports might be cracked from the valve/piston collision. Hopefully the head will come off tomorrow night, or Sunday, depending on time available.

I guess I should start a reader's cars thread for the old V70.
Anyway, here's a photo of the intake tappets and rockers after the cam shaft was removed. Every single 'hole' that the hydraulic tappets fit into is smashed (on the intake side, exhaust side looks fine, but the cam shaft has yet to be removed). As you can see, some of the rockers have fallen off, and all the rest are pushed up tight against the solid piece of aluminium between the camshafts. The head is scrap, I'm going to remove it on Sat, just to see what state the rest of the engine is in.
Apologies for the rubbish photo, it's from my phone, lit by an inspection lamp. I didn't want to take the Nikon in there when I was covered in oil.

fk ME!!!!!
Ha ha. No wonder it didn't run very well. I'm actually surprised at the extent of the damage, every one of the intake valves has suffered. Exhaust ones look ok on first glance though.I'm just glad I wasn't relying on it to get to work.
Stripping it is giving me something to do of an evening, rather than vegetating with the laptop.

What colour is your car btw?
Just been to see a nice 04/54 facelift S60 SE manual in a nice colour combo done just under 90k, full leather, heated front seats, folding mirrors, xenons & wash, trip computer, 17" alloys, PDC, (not sure whats std)
full volvo history, cam belt done at 70k/18mths ago, serviced couple of months ago, MOT history all stacks, only ever had one failure/advisory of a headlamp bulb! no towbar!
Lovely condition only thing of note was non premium tyres (but not nankang ditchfinders) and a mark/cut to lower of front bumper which would be sorted.
Drove well, nice and tight, bar torque lighting up the front wheels on damp roads (used to RWD petrol) computer showing long term average of over 48mpg
At a dealer, bit more than I was looking to pay, what do the collective think this is relatively rare car is worth from a dealer?
