Sold the "free" excavator on EBay for £130...was only on there a day! So after fees, we both got a brand new set for about £85 instead of £145. Wish I'd have bought anohter 3 now.
can I ask what the postage costed you please?
Nothing - it was collected in person.

I put in the advert that I would charge whatever it cost me at the post office. Seems to be about £10 judging by other similar items sold.

At last it's mine!

Spare one on EBay later if anyone's interested.
I bought one of those for my 5 year old last xmas. (Honest I really did buy it for him!!!)

Couldn't believe it arrived with 3 instruction books!

He loves it, though it really is a shelf ornament rather than a play toy.

We had superb fun building it, we team up with me finding all the bits and laying them out for him whilst he puts them together according to the pictures in the book. Took us two days to build it!

We're building up quite a collection of Lego now - it's fantastic stuff and I hope he manages to keep it all into his adult life.
Great! My son's just 4, and I'm planning on doing the same. Hopefully he'll understand! Might start with the loader though.

What I don't like is that Lego is now so specific - it says on the box that it will build two models. The old stuff you got instructions for about 5 or 6 IIRC. Ah well.
So we made a start today straight after school. We got as far as completing the basic chassis and part of the drive gearbox. He managed 1 1/2 hours before getting bored with it, which isn't bad at all. Great practice counting the pieces out, and figuring out how to hold the assemblies to match the pictures. We will contine tomorrow afternoon...

Look what arrived in the post yesterday:

4 hours later after a fantastic and very interesting build:

The detail of this set is amazing. It has a working rock-n-roll bed, wardrobe that opens and has a t-shirt in it, folding table, sink unit, lava lamp, detailed engine and cab that has gear lever and 3 pedals.
If you like Lego you will love this!

I've been getting all my old technic lego out the loft and I'm going through cleaning it up and rebuilding it properly with my 5 year old son. First up is the 1985 excavator:

All the bits were there, except for 8 track links which I'll order off ebay.

Ours isn't finished yet!

Plus IIRC it says on page 1 not to try to excavate powdery/gravelly things...

My 4 y/o and I (& Grandad) are loving putting this excavator together. Little bits at a time. Basically it's a humungous gearbox on tracks...

Not having bought any Lego Technic for decades, I can't help feeling it's basically a load of model-specific parts in a bag. Not sure of the percentage of specific parts:generic parts, but it seems more like a dis-assembleable kit than a generic construction set to me.

Got to love the sheer madness of it all though.

I think that's Lego in general, not just Technic. Feels like a bit of a backward step to me but Joe Public obviously wants more aesthetically correct models. Leaves you somewhat limited without a set of instructions though. You can't make some of the random stuff I used to as a kid if a piece only has one very specific role in one model and the kits are composed of many such pieces.

its in quite a few technic sets, I've seen them changed colour using the ones from other sets.

indeed such as robbing your post office of it;s full height glazed panels and fully glazed door to built a 8 or 10 stud wide double decker coach or a 3 foot long and just shy of 5 foot tall 'volvo nee whitbread 60' yacht
