I've visited this thread a few times to look at the pretty pictures and it never really sunk in where it actually was, I just assumed east coast/west coast somewhere. I've only just realised I've been over that stretch many many times in my 3 years of travelling from Dewsbury to Manchester (Salford University), when I didn't have a car. Good times (1983-1986).

What a wonderful project. I too spent quite a few hours stood on the embankment waiting to photograph the interesting variety of trains. It would be the same era from about 1976 to 1985.
I also got heavily involved in recreating the Colne Valley line a few miles further west and in 2mm. The project is still going but it’s over a decade since I left it.
I must find time to visit a model railway exhibition again.

I’m not sure I really realised how big this is till that video.

Oof, that is about twice the size I thought it was! I guess my brain had scaled it for OO/HO.
For anyone interested in the route, Don Coffey has a couple of cab videos on his YouTube channel, recorded on a freight train over the Pennines. Several thousand horsepower pulling 2000+ tonnes of freight. I think it covers part of the route anyway.
