I think it's absolutely OK to build a Typhoon – whats 21" and a laminar flow wing between friends?
If we were building a Spitfire, there would be a lot more difference between a Spitfire Mk5 and a Spitfire 24 than there is between a Typhoon and a Tempest.
I don't think you've been trying hard enough If we were building a Spitfire, there would be a lot more difference between a Spitfire Mk5 and a Spitfire 24 than there is between a Typhoon and a Tempest.
There are currently 19 suitable kits on evilbay, 14 of which are advertised by "Top rated sellers"
I was just offering sympathetic words to other less motivated souls. By the way, if Typhoons are permitted, they should be built as part of this GB, not "oh well if Typhoons are included here's one I knocked up earlier".
I am building a Tiffie but I wouldn't want to add it to the GB
If we said that Typhoon was just another version of the later Tempest, we could then say that the Sea Fury is just as much the same and have to allow it. [guess what is in my spare room too?]
I will post a build thread at the exhortations of my friends dr_gn and Eric, but I hope there's not going to be any complaining if I do.
My model is not being built under the time restraints and such of the GB, (it didn't ought to be 'cos I started last Wednesday before the GB began) and may take nearly forever.
('spect I would have voted for the dear old Shagbat or suggested the Lysander, cos dad worked on these back in '40. But I didnt vote. If building my Tiffie works out nicely I would consider joining the next GB, let's see shall we?)
I'm entering this contest despite having neither constructed nor painted a model aircraft before.
Today I bought this: http://www.magictoybox-online.co.uk/acatalog/info%... and, much as it doesn't have the detail or sharpness of the Academy or Airfix versions, I relish the challenge. For the record, I won't be using an airbrush but may add a few figures.
I do appreciate the time scale for this GB though- especially as I start a new job on the 20th and free time may be tight thereafter.
I wish all contributers the best..

Hi Kenny
My real speciality is "ex-modeller" with an open list of made models from the seventies and eighties, you might have seen before there's a couple of mine at Cosford too.
Not doing this build, having fun working a Frog Typhoon into a decent shape. It is a good basic kit but nowhere near as good as your Smer/Heller/Airfix Tempest.
If you take note of the postings that your fellow participants put up here and work round its idiosynchracies (don't worry ALL kits have those!) you can have fun. This GB looks like a good place to be developing an enjoyment of the aircraft side of the hobby.
Mind you, thanks for the kind words for the narrow boat. I really must de-dust that poor old thing some day...

edited to stop looking like a patronising tit, which wasn't intended

As Perdu has said, the Airfix Tempest is a nice little kit. Heller kits from the mid to late 70s were very nice indeed. I've recently built a Fieseler 103 Reichenberg and Bachem Natter from that era and they were both rather nice. Their main drawback (if you consider it a drawback) is that the panels are represented by raised lines rather than recessed lines. Raised lines were the norm up until the early 1990s on most models (with some exceptions).
I'm looking forward to starting mine in a couple of weeks - hopefully sooner.

Aha
paint, I see paint
(I really must get one of they posh cutting boards, been relying for years on an old kitchen worksurface in my workroom...)
4 inches
the standard length of a yellow tip on propellors (one of those oft remembered, frequently wrong factoids that lurk unwanted in the old bonce)
Yours looks pretty good doc

If you get a cutting board, get the biggest you can. I got an A4 one and it was too small - you really want a size you can cover your entire modelling area with. I got an A2 one at the weekend and it's much better.paint, I see paint
