Thought that might be the way forward to be honest. I'll either buy some oven cleaner (don't seem to have any) or some cheap brake fluid (not using my best DOT 5.1) - I take it that won't kill the plastic model?

It's never harmed any I've put in, but you can always test it on some of the left over sprue or spare parts first.

Well I got a new body sorted for it in the end it now has the first coat of colour on it and it looks far better using propper automotive primer as a base, I'm going to do a light rub back on it (2000 grit wet and dry) after it has had a few days to dry and cure before applying the last coat of colour, then it is onto clear coating it.

Pics to follow once it the colour is applied properly, ta for the advice.

Right for those of you wondering if this had disappeared I have finally got the colour on and I am about to apply the clear coat, I'll post pics when the clear coat is on and has had a few days to fully cure. Once all the stuff that requires air brush and aerosol cans to complete is out of the way it should come together fairly quickly (I hope).

Well the clearcoat is on now (the hood is getting a second coat and is drying at the minute, you can see the slight dullness in relation to the rest of it), so just the details to mask and paint now. The paint isn't perfect but I don't think the airbrush ready paint was quite thin enough next time I'll dilute it a bit more, but my next one is going to be a bit bigger than 1:25th scale biggrin

Looking good.

It's worth remembering for next time (if you didn't do it this time) that rubbing down the basecoat paints before clear coat and between the final colour coats pays big dividends in quality of finish. Did you use Zero clear?

Thanks, I just have to do the detail bits now then it is onto final assembly and decal application. I used a regular automotive aerosol clear coat, I think if I build another 1/25th scale kit I'll use them all from the same place (zero, primer, paint and clear) though I think I'll dilute them with about 1/3 thinners.

Rubbing down was "fun" I used 2000grit paper avoiding taking the edges off was difficult, especially details like the door handles.

Well that is nearly 10 months (bought the kit in November last year) and it still isn't finished though free time has been limited of late.

I tend to thin my Zero clear a bit (and a bit more for the final wet coat) but not the basecoats, which I've never had an issue with. I always spray the metallics at a higher pressure than the flat colours though. Clear coats are sprayed at really low pressures as well.

Its looking great now biggrin I bought my first batch of Zero paints and clear coat and apart from a tricky introduction, its gone pretty well. Thats what I like about modelling, you can leave a project and come back whenever you have the time. Rushing always makes things worse smile

Well it is finally finished. The stripes are on the car assembled woohoo

It isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, I couldn't mask the roof to paint the panel rubbers (the black strips) as the masking tape (Tamia stuff) marked the clear coat. Getting the trim line tape to form the stripes and go around corners was a pain too.

Things I didn't do in the end. Make the arial as per the actual car, do any under bonnet wiring details, make my own wheels, I also didn't do any UK specific SVA mods (eg under slung fog and reverse lights & side repeaters).

It has turned out I think the best it can. I can now try my hand at another project.

+1 looks great, well done.

BTW did you consider using black sprayed decal paper cut to profile for the rubbers? That way you get as many chances as you need to get it right, but ideally it would be done fefore fitting the glazing I guess.

Thanks very much biggrin

I didn't even know there was such a thing as paint able decal paper - noted for future plastic modelling endeavours.

There you go:

You can spray some black paint on and cut out the shape (or cut the shape first of course) rather than use an inkjet printer.

Cheers, damn that stuff would have made the stripes too, it would have been thin enough to curve nicely around the body work - Oh well I know for next time smile
