Well I'm another one of these people inspired by James May to build myself a plastic kit - but Instead of a Spitfire I thought I'd make a car, not a classic or vintage one, but my own. A 2005 Ford Mustang GT.

This is how she currently looks:-

all the bits are there and I have to say the attention to detail is pretty good.

However what I want to do is make a scale model of my own car my first hurdle is the colour of my car is Redfire Metallic now I can get this for £8 from Halfords as a touch up paint (Indeed I do have some for the car) so getting the colour isn't the issue neither is applying (I'll use an airbrush) Will the Holts mixed paint work on a plastic kit - or will it either a) not adhere or b) eat the plastic? The second is the wheels the stock wheels in the kit are different to mine and I'd like some the same, is there anywhere that makes 1/25 scale car wheels?

Oh and here is my car which I am basing the kit build on:-

Cheers,
Matt

Thanks muchly for the response I'll check out the links and keep you all posted on the build process - might take a while as I am away with work quite a bit at the moment but I think leaving it between stages might yield a better finished model.

Well the engine is assembled and aside from a few touch ups is done:-

My painting isn't the best as my hands aren't the steadiest but all in all it is going fairly well I have a few other bits painted in the sprues ready for assembly/second coat of paint but I am going to have to leave the continuation on until next week.
Oh and, yep the rust coloured main crank pulley and exhaust headers are authentic to the real car laugh.

Thanks for the offer on the stripes but if I do take it up they'll be plain stripes (mines not a GT500 paperbag the previous owner "decorated it" and I haven't had chance to change them yet).

I might have a look at getting some of that, I'll practice on the sprues first to get it right though - took me a weekend to get that engine together smile

Well I have been working on my Mustang Model a bit more so a few couple more photo's for your viewing pleasure: -

As you can see the engine is in now and I have the details painted on the underside.

Looks like I may have to have a bash at resin casting my own wheels as I can't find any of the correct type - either that or I stay with the stock kit wheels.

ETA: The Holts car paint doesn't eat the plastic kit so I have used it to paint the insides of the engine bay and given it a coat of matt clearcoat to bring it down to a buff finish like the actual car. It won't be used for the outside though as it is much too thick for a spray gun and doesn't mix well with model thinners tongue out.

Here is a picture of the underside of the car - aside from a few touch ups here and there the underside is done, I am going to finish off most of the engine bay and start on the interior next.

I really like that. Are you plannig on weathering the underside or leaving it showroom?
I think I am going to leave it showroom, as much as I'd like to weather it a bit I fear I may ruin it by doing so.

To anyone still interested I am still building this Mustang model - it is just at one of those stages (plus me being busy) that there is allot of paint drying and not allot else going on. I should hopefully have some pictures Tomorrow/Tuesday.

Well here is the interior all but done - a few finishing touches here and there (you can still see some red of the plastic on the center console if you look closely) and all will be good.

Right sorry for the hold up peeps I took delivery of the paint from Hiroby.com this week - damn good match it is too. However as I will have to airbrush in the garage I am going to wait for the weather to warm up a bit first as I don't want to be spraying in sub zero or near zero temperatures.

Those dashboard decals look fantastic! As does the realistic 'glint' from the gear changer in that first photo.

Now, how about taking strands of 5 amp fuse wire, cut to size and painted black, and carefully glued into the engine bay to represent the HT leads? Tricky I know but they would add more realism.

Well done, so far it looks great.
Cheers biggrin,

I might do that actually I think I have some fuse wire somewhere. Revell thoughtfully provided a chromed plastic gear stick as part of the kit hence the nice glint smile

The decals are really good I have to say, if a bit thick for some of the smaller details.

Not quite yet, I have been rather busy plus waiting for an airbrush to be loaned from someone I know. I got bored of waiting and went and bought an airbrush today the body and other air brush able parts are now primed and ready to receive their first coat of colour. I'll have some more Pic's in the coming days of the progression hopefully it won't be too long before it is finished (finally).

Just to give you something new to look at here is a rather unexciting picture of the body primed and ready to receive it's top colour and then clear-coat.

Well the application of the paint colour could have gone better, the paint has reacted nicely with the primer on the hood so that is almost ruined (thin coat) and as for the rest of it, well here is the body.

as you can see it looks like orange peel basically because I have been spraying on the paint in such thin layers to stop it reacting it is drying in little tiny blobs. I am hoping a rub down will solve it, and a good coat of clear-coat (required anyway) will bring the shine up and get rid of the orange peel effect.

What paint are you using? I take it you're airbrushing? If so, what pressure are you spraying at and also how thin is the paint?
Zero Paints custom mixed stuff, it states airbrush ready on the bottle it came in. Yes I'm airbrushing, I'm using a badger air brush with a propellant tin so the pressure is whatever comes out of the tin.

I am thinking that the paint (or the thinners in it) doesn't like the base paint, as some of it literally wrinkled up and ate into the primer (satin white enamel paint (Revell) applied thinned with the airbrush) stripping it eek

Is this one of those always buy the paint and primer from the same place lessons?

Thought that might be the way forward to be honest. I'll either buy some oven cleaner (don't seem to have any) or some cheap brake fluid (not using my best DOT 5.1) - I take it that won't kill the plastic model?

Well I got a new body sorted for it in the end it now has the first coat of colour on it and it looks far better using propper automotive primer as a base, I'm going to do a light rub back on it (2000 grit wet and dry) after it has had a few days to dry and cure before applying the last coat of colour, then it is onto clear coating it.

Pics to follow once it the colour is applied properly, ta for the advice.

Right for those of you wondering if this had disappeared I have finally got the colour on and I am about to apply the clear coat, I'll post pics when the clear coat is on and has had a few days to fully cure. Once all the stuff that requires air brush and aerosol cans to complete is out of the way it should come together fairly quickly (I hope).

Well the clearcoat is on now (the hood is getting a second coat and is drying at the minute, you can see the slight dullness in relation to the rest of it), so just the details to mask and paint now. The paint isn't perfect but I don't think the airbrush ready paint was quite thin enough next time I'll dilute it a bit more, but my next one is going to be a bit bigger than 1:25th scale biggrin
