can anybodt help me with a problem with my car as it has been going on for 10 months and its driving me nuts. my engine cuts out when decelerating just as the car is nearly stopped. some days it does it and other days it does not. my mechanic has checked the flexible hose from the air inlet to the carb,renewed the idle control valve,renewed a sensor (some thing to do with the manifold).peugeot says the cant advise anything else. there is only 30,000 miles on clock and i cant sell it to someone else as i would feel terrible.the car shows up as having no faults when put on the computer

What engine is in the pug?
1.4 petrol had a coil pack problem, which spiked the ECU often, coil & ECU together will cure it
You said your mechanic has checked the inlet to the carb
- Unless it is an import from North Africa, it will not have a carb
Has this fault started after a service? Just wondering if it has the right plugs in it
The VIN number would be useful, should start VF3, either stamped in boot area or on the front screen, just under the RH wiper

thank u gas monkey. strangely enough,if i remember not long after this problem started my car wouldnt start one morning and the mchanic came out to the house with a wee computer thingy and said it was the coil,went and got one and fitted it.do you think there is a connection or just a coincidence? my mechanic(not a main dealer)is fed up with trying to find the poblem and i cant afford to keep forking out 30 to 50 pounds everytime he fits a new sensor or valve. i havent a clue about cars as im a typical woman, drive it and put petrol in it!

The old coil, you had in the car may have corrupted / contaminated the ECU.
Hopefully, the replacement one was new and supplied by Peugeot, so will be OK, if not its a bit of a lottery.
The fix will be to confirm that it has a good coil. If not sure, replace it, The ECU is far more expensive than the coil, so if you are unsure replace them both, otherwise you risk damaging another ECU
Make sure the new coil is fitted before the new ECU as otherwise you will repeat the fault to the new ECU !

Get your mechanic to check the obvious electrics, like the main plugs to the engine, ECU and coil connections for water ingress, corrosion and loose/ bent terminals.
A few early 307's had throttle pot problems, causing cutting out / stalling,
If you are as much of a bird as you said in your original post, print this off and give it your mechanic

As a general rule, unless the engine diagnostic light is on, the ECU will show no faults (even though there clearly is one), the Peugeot dealers can read the actual operating outputs from each of the electrical componants, so with a bit of deduction can pin point the actual fault is. They can also read more fault codes, than your man in a van could. When a fault is stored, without putting the light on, it is known as a P code (only Peugeot has the software to decipher P Codes)To be fair, the cutting out could be a million and one things from the cheap (dodgy electrical connections, spark plugs etc, water in a electrical connection etc) to the bloody expensive, (ECU's, blocked cats etc)
You said that your mechanic has looked at this over the last 10 months, so I am assuming he has covered the basics.
How often does it cut out? - Is it slow speed ie) Below 30, when parking, usually light throttle?
Fit BOSCH plugs - 1.4 TU3JP engines better with bosch plugs
Check / resistance test leads and extensions
Check the wiring to the throttle pot is very likely to cause it
(the wires break inside the moulded plug, and will fail when they get hot and expand apart, can be hard to find)
MAP sensor and wiring
Engine speed sensor
If all is good and the fact that you have already changed the coil, this leads me to think that this is where the problem lies, it is possible that the old coil has spiked the software in the ECU, effectively the damage to the ECU has been done, causing the cutting out to continue. Get your mechanic to check the supplier name on the coil, if it is a SAGEM one, change it. The later ones were made by a company called ELECTRICFIL
The old SAGEM? coil may have corruped the engine ECU, if the fault persists, so you may need to change the ECU also
The coil spike was more common on the later KFX spec, KFW less so

there was no name on the coil pack so what was decided was that the mechanic would put a new throttle pot on the car first before i spend a lot of money on a new coil and an emc as my engine was ticking over at just 900 but the day after that the car developed a terrible thudding everytime you braked and a wee noise,like a wee bell ringing.it is something to do with the abs brake pump. so it is booked in for next week to get that sorted then i will go back to the problem of it cutting out.no bad for a car that just runs about the town,30,000 miles on the clock and never above 40mph.i will never buy another peugeot again!
