Bodykit for New Leon

New model gets aggressive bolt on bits

none
SEAT are despererately hoping that their new generation Leon will enjoy the same success as the outgoing model which captured the imagination of many drivers thanks to great dynamics, practicality and a badge representing a new breed of sporting car.

At the Autosport Show last week, SEAT previeweda dramatic factory-approved styling kit for the new model.  Available from next month through the SEAT Dealer network, the aerodynamic styling kit adds plenty of aggression to the slightly fatter looking Leon.

The show car, finished in Luna Grey, featured a range of modifications, with new front and rear bumpers – incorporating vertical black grilles at each corner – striking 18” wheels and extended side skirts.  At the back changes include an oval centrally-located exhaust pipe and lairy spoiler at the top of the hatch.

The kit will be available in four separate packs, to suit a variety of tastes and budgets, and can be fitted to any latest-generation Leon by all SEAT Dealers.

The packs on offer comprise body kit only, body kit plus exhaust, body kit plus alloy wheels and tyres, or the full works – in other words, all three packs together.  In addition, a choice between the oval exhaust or two separate tail pipes positioned at each rear corner, provides scope for further customisation.  Prices are yet be confirmed, but are likely to start at around £1,200 for the styling kit, going up to £2,500 for the whole package (both prices RRP, ex VAT).

I'm surprised more manufacturers don't do this. Heads of design have their designers sketch up things like more aggressive bumpers and other styling mods after a design for the whole model has been signed off. I certainly know that Ford Australia has a nice selection of tasty bodykits that could be put in production for the BA-BF falcon. As for the Seat, I quite like it, but not the off-center 'tooth' in the lower mouth on the racer.

Ali.

I still don't understand this phrase "aggression". What exactly is "aggressive" supposed to do for a car - and why do we keep on hearing this phrase? I think the designers' vocabularies and imaginations must be somewhat stunted if all they are ever after is making a hunk of mobile metal (or GRP), err...MORE aggressive.

Can't we think up some other aspects of a car's design to work on?

Rumours of extending the options in these kit to include day-glo under car lighting have been strenously denied by SEAT.

What will the youphff do if all the sht bodykit has already been added? Mind Boggles!

I actually quite like the look of that.

Its no more ASBO than the Focus ST or Astra VXR, so i'm just gonna wait for the Cupra R version to come out with that bodykit and the 2.0t VAG lump in it giving out 240bhp as promised.

That should be a pretty mean car, and will still cost less than the Golf Gti...

Just been chatting to my local Seat dealer about the new Cupra R, latest news is that it's due early 07, will be around 240BHP, use the Audi Quattro 4wd system and may have a 7 speed box!

Sounds fun!

£2.5k (+VAT) all in for a dealer fitted kit. Sounds a very good price seeing as a decent set of aftermarket 18inch wheels are going to be £1k, exhaust £400, bumbers etc £500 and you keep the manufacturers warranty!!!!!

That must be a misprint.

There isn't going to be a Cupra R, seat have stopped doing them. Only an FR & Cupra which are the quivalent or Cupra & R. I can also quarantee there will be no 4wd either, too many Audi & VW toes to tread on.

Saw this car at Autosport Show.
Photos don't really do this any justice - it looks better in the "flesh" so to say.

I really like it, always thought the new Leon was a interesting alternative to the Golf, but it did look a bit like an mpv so that sets it off a treat.

Actually the dealer did only mention the Cupra, it was me that added the R (quite possibly in error).

My understanding was that the TFSI was the equivilent to the Cupra, being a 185BHP 2.0l turbo.

Where did you get this from, my local dealer seemed fairly sure of his facts. The only thing he seemed unsure of was whether it would be a 6 or 7 speed gearbox.

Yeah, I don't get that either. Then again, it seems that, looking at their design sketches, designers have forgotten proportion. There was a time when designers would sketch their proposals like an architect or artist. Nowadays the 3D proposals all look like those car-chariacatures you buy at motorshows - all cartoonish, frowning and over-aggressive, with tiny doors squashed out of proportion by huge wheelarches carrying over-detailed over-sized blingwheels with about a condom's-worth of rubber on them.

Still, I reckon a manufacturer offering a range of variations on the styling is a good idea that allows the designer to see a variety of design proposals make it to production.

It seems SEAT dealers are a bit confused!

My local tells me that the Cupra will arrive in May with a 240bhp petrol (I am guessing 2L Turbo) and a 170bhp Diesel (as will be found in the Passat et al).

I dont think the current Sport is the old Cupra equivalent.

Just to confirm the situation from SEAT re. Leon in 2006: the FR will go on sale in the UK around the middle of this year, with diesel and petrol options. The 2.0-litre 16v diesel, using high-pressure 'Pumpe Duse' and piezo-electric injectors, will produce 170 PS; the 2.0-litre turbo FSI petrol will put out 200 PS.
The Cupra, set for launch towards the tail-end of the year, is yet to be confirmed, but is likely to feature around 240 PS, using a variation of the FR's 2.0-litre turbo FSI. No word on gearboxes yet, but it is set to be front wheel drive.
Cupra R is indeed no more - with the new generation of SEAT models, there will be two levels of high performance models - FR (on the Ibiza, Leon and Altea) and Cupra (on Ibiza and Leon).
Sorry this message is a bit rambling, but having read through the postings, thought you might want a more definite answer!

Thanks

So you work for SEAT? Can I email you about the conservation I had with a utterly useless service manager about my creaking steering rack?!

Does anyone else think that the designation 'FR' sounds like it should stand for 'Front-Rear'? On an FWD car this annoys me slightly, but then again, I'm quite fussy.

the plastic inserts and grilles on the show car were a very tacky looking cheap plastic - touring car looked good though, first time I've said that since the end of the supertouring category

Rob P - just seen your comment about steering rack noises. You should talk again to your SEAT Dealer about this, as there is a fix for this that has now been communicated to the network. It's a harmless noise from the rack, but obviously you would prefer it not to be there.
