Connecting an iPhone to the Car Audio

My wife has just bought an iPhone and wants to connect it (and charge it) in her 58 plate JCW. The car has a USB socket, but when the phone is plugged in using the Apple cable to the USB port, nothing happens and the USB comes up as empty in the car audio menu. I guess I am missing something, but does anybody know what?

It should work with just the apple cable but you'll need to play/control the music using the phone itself. However there's a better solution if you get the cable that connects the iphone to both the USB and the aux socket next to it. It's commonly known as the "Y-cable" and mini dealers can supply it. This should give you control over the ipod/phone functions using the radio controls.
