The Rover is dead. Long live the Rover!

It's either a case of kicking yourself for not just doing the extra, or kicking yourself for wasting money doing more than you really needed to for the same overall result. Having said that, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' approach ..............
I have achieved no progress on the Rover today except to price up the parts to either build, upgrade or replace the engine.
I have achieved the realisation that I have reached a situation of paralysis by analysis. In other words, I still don't know what to do for the best.
However Pupp is spot on in the excerpt of his quote above.
Having heard about the size of the bill to replace the cams on a Cerbera the complete new P5B Engine sounds like a steal!
I will be at the trading post tomorrow and will bring along some oily bits to view and discuss. Perhaps we can have a mass debate?

The first bit, what a lovely expression
The second bit...
Tonyvid, you have a bad mind (well done)
Not a good day today - quite frustating as the old boy would not give up the sump bolts or the starter motor without a fight. although I got all of the bolts out I still haven't managed to remove the sump as the steering arm is in the way so I'll wait until the engine is out to check the crank bearings and make a decision.
My trip to the Lucas agents in Kretterin was also a wash out trying to source a replacement alternator - I have done some more research tonight and may have another little trip tomorrow.
Burlen want £215.00 to refurb the carbs
No piccies as no real progress to see yet./

Many thanks to Sporting Bear for his help today. I drove him up the wall (Piccies will follow)
We managed to remove the front slam panel, the nine bolts holding the bell housing and we tried to lift the engine out. However, no matter how much we pulled, pushed, twisted, lifted, swore, levered and prayed the damn engine will not separate from the 'box by more than about an inch.
Never had an engine this reluctant to leave its gearbox.
Any ideas?
All of the bolts are undone.
Thanks again to Nigel.

You sure you got all the mounts undone, and all the hoses/cables off (seriously)?

This is usually caused by something being out of line between the box and engine and it all binding up - just a suggestion but is the gearbox in neutral as the input shaft might be hanging on to the clutch.

Can you claim you bought some dodgy petrol earlier this week and get Tesco to pay for the rebuild??
nice thought Mark but somehow I don't think it would wash!
Anyway, a quick update.
With thanks to Simon Hill up in Bonny Scotland for his advice support and contacts, Nigel (Sporting Bear) for assisting in spanner wielding and making up new swear words, and Alison for not moaning about the oil patch on the carpet (whoops!) the engine is out!
Now that I have removed it I can see what the problem was. Much easier if you unbolt the torque converter, which is much easier to do BEFORE you disconnect the engine & box.
Now the cleanup and rebuild can begin.
Now, where did I put that sledge hammer?

Good luck at the weekend, it will be busy and grimy I expect!
Thanks Tony. Plenty of Gunk and a stiff brush to start with followed by pressure washer and a good scrubbing with soapy water. And if that doesn't get me clean...............................................
